Accountable To Practice Nurse Team Leader / Business Partner
Education Qualification required Phlebotomy - certificate of competency
Role Definition The post holder will assist the practice team in providing nursing care/treatments and supporting the nursing/practice staff. As a member of the practice team the postholder will be aware of the needs of patients and carers and will work within the appropriate level of competence. Working under the indirect supervision of the Practice Nurse Team Leader and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the post holder undertakes tasks and duties delegated by the nurse team leader and other suitably qualified clinical professionals. The Practice has a number of patients who are housebound or live in care homes and the HCA may be required to visit these patients in the community to obtain blood samples or to take physiological measurements.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Assist in the general care of patients, usually working unsupervised but to the instructions of a registered nurse. Specific duties may include: - Taking and recording temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure. - Urinalysis - Venepuncture - Administer influenza and pneumococcal injections under a patient specific directive - Carrying out height and weight checks
Give advice and support to patients and carers within duties appropriate to grade and to level of competence
Communicate closely with other colleagues, reporting on patient's condition as appropriate Assist in raising awareness of health and well being by participating in patient health promotion and screening initiatives. Undertake INR dosing utilising the INR Start in- house software Report anomalies to senior members of the clinical team
To collect and package laboratory specimens
To clean and sterilise surgical instruments and childrens toys based in the waiting area and consulting rooms
To maintain stock control system for disposables in all clinical/treatment rooms.
To maintain agreed standards of hygiene in all clinical/treatment rooms. To chaperone patients as necessary Provide cover for other healthcare assistant staff during annual leave and sick leave Participate in additional clinics that may be run (including weekends) to administer influenza vaccines etc
2. Clerical To undertake clerical duties as required to support the nursing team
To utilize the computer to record patient information and operate the appointments system
To order treatment room items, including vaccines, contraceptive implants, baby immunisations, etc and keep accurate records so that stock control and timely claims can be maintained. Clearing and restocking of consulting/treatment rooms, including timely order of stock items under your control. To monitor fridge temperatures and report anomalies.
3. Administration Keep accurate and up-to-date records
To work within practice's guidelines, policies and procedures
To have responsibility for the Health and Safety and welfare of others in the working environment, to follow safe working practices and to comply at all times with the practice's Health and Safety Policies and Procedures
To work within the framework of relevant statute/Department of Health Directives
4. General To ensure confidentiality on all matters relating to patients and information obtained during the course of employment
To maintain good working relationships with other members of the practice/primary care team and staff from other agencies To support the equality, diversity and rights of patients, carers colleagues
To maintain good industrial relations
To identify training needs of self and participate in relevant education/training programmes
To attend staff meetings as required
To undertake such duties as may be required from time to time, as are consistent with the responsibilities of the grade and the individual's level of competence.
