We are seeking an experienced, highly organised, and commercially minded Practice & Operations Manager to oversee the day-to-day operational, financial, and compliance functions of a busy and well-established law firm. This is a hands-on, multi-disciplinary role requiring strong leadership, regulatory awareness, and the ability to manage multiple operational areas simultaneously.
The successful candidate will act as a central pillar of the firm, ensuring ongoing SRA and CQS compliance, maintaining financial oversight, coordinating IT and office operations, supervising staff, and supporting a professional client experience at all times. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a proactive individual with strong practice management experience to play a key role in the stability and efficiency of the firm.
Duties
Oversee the daily operations of the law firm to ensure a smooth, compliant, and professional working environment
Ensure ongoing compliance with SRA regulations, CQS requirements, and internal policies and procedures
Maintain and update firm-wide compliance documentation, training records, and regulatory registers
Support the MLRO and assist with AML processes, file reviews, and internal compliance checks
Manage financial administration including supplier payments, bookkeeping oversight, expense tracking, and budgeting support
Oversee payroll processing and liaise with external accountants and auditors where required
Act as liaison with IT support providers to manage systems, data security, and GDPR compliance
Supervise and support secretaries, paralegals, and administrative staff
Manage office operations including health & safety, fire safety, facilities, and supplier contracts
Coordinate reception and front-of-house functions, including calls, post, client enquiries, and meeting room management
Administer connected property accounts, including ground rent records, demands, and payment tracking
Manage and update the firm's online presence and oversee client feedback and reviews
Skills
Proven experience in a law firm practice management or senior office management role
Strong understanding of SRA rules, regulatory compliance, and legal office procedures
Experience overseeing financial processes including payments, bookkeeping, and payroll
Confidence handling sensitive, confidential, and regulatory matters with discretion
Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities effectively
Strong leadership and people-management skills
Professional communication skills, both written and verbal
Competence using legal and financial systems such as LEAP and Xero (desirable)
Ability to work under pressure while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
