This is an exciting time within Hiscox as the organisation is currently undertaking several large transformation projects. This role is within the Re & ILS business unit, which is initiating a programme to integrate, align and re-platform its modelling, pricing and portfolio optimisation systems. This is your chance to be at the heart of the action, helping to mentor and guide the development and integration of systems using a cloud first approach that will allow Hiscox vision and goals to be realised.

The Principal Software Engineer is a senior technical role. As such, depth of knowledge in an array of technologies is expected along with the best practices of the software engineering discipline. They are expected to collaborate, advise, support and challenge the Lead Software Engineer and Stakeholders. They will be seen as a \xe2\x80\x9cgo to\xe2\x80\x9d figure within the Chapter for technical advice and will mentor and guide less experienced and newer members of the Chapter.

Outside of the chapter they will take an active role in sharing knowledge across the business via such forums as a community of practice or lunch and learns.

When the Lead Software Engineer is unavailable there will be an element of deputisation, ensuring the chapter is kept well informed of certain matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate openness in the software engineering chapter through pairing programming, coaching and mentoring chapter members.
  • Provide technical guidance to the chapter and foster Agile ways of delivering value.
  • Suggest innovative ways of engineering and architecting software.
  • Collaborate with all stakeholders ensuring the most value possible is delivered efficiently.
  • Demonstrate good development practice and processes throughout the chapter.
  • Influence the technical direction across the team.
  • Contribute to product and tool selection.
  • Support testing, production readiness and release activities.
  • Promoting good practices across all of Hiscox.
  • Working closely with the Architecture team, identifying solution options and producing solution designs in accordance with internal documentation templates and architecture principles.
Essential Skills/Experience:
  • Strong commercial Microsoft .NET/C# with SQL Server development
  • Have a very solid foundation of good development practices
  • Strong commercial front end development
  • Strong knowledge of GIT and branching strategies
  • Experience building and evolving API services, middle-tier and backend applications built in the .NET framework
  • Cloud based development (Azure) , integration experience and microservices
  • Working in an Agile, Automated Build (CI) and Deployment environments, supported by appropriate tooling
  • Database design, including stored procedures, indexing and query optimisation
  • A willingness to learn and share knowledge
  • Understanding of solution architecture and the technical disciplines/architecture layers within.
  • Knowledge of application architecture patterns.
  • Design and development knowledge of Azure services, particularly PaaS services such as Azure Functions, Azure SQL Database, APIM,
  • Strong ability to influence the direction of the solution.
  • Ability to balance architectural purity with tactical or transitional solutions to meet business requirements.
Advantageous:
  • Experience in Finance, Insurance and/or Reinsurance
  • Cloud Data platforms / Snowflake /WPF
  • Azure Solution Architecture certification.
  • Experience of hybrid network scenarios.
  • High level understanding of schema design Best Practices
  • High level understanding of networking concepts (VNETs, Subnets, TCP ports, infrastructure concepts).
