Role Purpose
To ensure your team strives to evaluate and understand project and product design requirements. Take the lead role in achieving a high level of technical competence within the process engineering team. Lead a team of CAD and process engineers. Work alongside the project and sales teams, taking accountability for the process design and functionality of all projects from the initial design concepts through to the final commissioning of the solutions we provide to our customers.
You will have comprehensive knowledge of the processes involved in manufacturing various food/drink products and be able to confidently discuss design requirements with our customers, and have your engineering team meet them with industry leading solutions.
Designs will be completed with sustainability and energy efficiency at the forefront of your mind, whilst ensuring compliance with the latest industry codes of practice.
Accountabilities
Provide guidance and leadership to the process engineering team, fostering a culture of technical excellence, accuracy and innovation, putting the Company ahead of competition.
Ensure accuracy and quality of outputs from the process engineering team.
Oversee the entire design project lifecycle, ensuring that design requirements are met, and process design outputs (P&IDs, process descriptions, etc.) are delivered on time and within budget. Utilising design reviews and a reporting structure as appropriate.
Ensure software functional design specifications (FDS) and subsequent simulations are fit for purpose and provide optimal running of our designed solutions.
Manage and mentor CAD and process engineers, fostering their professional development and ensuring their alignment with project objectives.
Work closely with the project and sales teams to understand customer requirements and develop industry leading solutions that meet or exceed their needs effectively.
Ensure that all designs prioritise sustainability and energy efficiency, while also complying with industry codes of practice and regulatory/legislative requirements.
Implement engineering guidelines and quality assurance processes to maintain the highest standards of design and functionality in all projects.
Identify opportunities for process optimisation and improvement, driving efficiency gains and cost savings where possible.
Seek innovations and opportunities to offer industry leading process designs.
Engage with customers, suppliers and other stakeholders to ensure alignment and satisfaction throughout the project lifecycle.
Oversee creation of specifications for key components such as valves, pumps and heat exchangers in the form of a component schedule.
Support commissioning activities by having full accountability for achieving the required performance requirements during the commissioning phases of projects.
Manage/identify risks using a design risk assessment process, and/or support HAZOP/HACCP studies where applicable.
Support bid presentations to sell our design solutions in a competitive engineering sector. Assist with marketing drives and the creation of technical marketing material.
Participate in the recruitment process of personnel for your team.
Lead the development and wellbeing of your team, conducting reviews and appraisals.
Conduct return to work interviews and complete SPEL 171 form for team members returning from sickness absences.
Authorise holiday requests from your team.
Person Specification
Overview of requiredqualifications, knowledge, experience, skills and attributes.
Essential:
Formal qualification in chemical engineering, HND/HNC minimum; other engineering disciplines, e.g. mechanical engineering, systems engineering would be considered
Proficient in the use of 2D AutoCAD package such as AutoCAD Mechanical
Experience with, and understanding of, processing equipment; experience specific to the dairy, food and/or beverage industries would be beneficial
Willing to travel and attend customer sites to suit business needs
A good knowledge of material properties
Innovative problem-solving skills, creativity, proficiency, and an ability to work in a team
Excellent communication and people skills
Good planning, administrative and organisational skills
Ability to manage several tasks and people concurrently and meet deadlines
