Job Introduction

The Food, Environment, Rural Affairs & Natural History unit is part of the BBC Audio West and Wales department. The unit produces hundreds of programmes for Radio 4, BBC Sounds, the World Service and Radio 3. From Farming Today, to Ramblings, Tweet of the Day and the Food Programme and many more.

We are looking for a Producer to join our Farming Today team. . But, over time, most of our staff tend to move across a range of programmes.

Farming Today is the longstanding, specialist, agricultural & rural affairs news and current affairs programme for the BBC, it has been a fixture of the airwaves for more than eighty years. It is broadcast on Radio 4 every weekday before the Today programme. Farming Today reaches a weekly audience of 1.5 million listeners. The audience includes a wide section of society from opinion formers, politicians, people with an interest in rural affairs, policy makers as well as the farming community. Farming Today is highly trusted but this also means that there are high expectation of its reporting.

Main Responsibilities

Farming Today:
We are looking for a Producer with great ideas about Farming , the countryside, environmental issues and the agricultural economy to work on Farming Today, Farming Today This Week and On Your Farm. You will be experienced in daily journalism and able to cope with tight deadlines and react to the unexpected. You will be able to find us the stories and the people that bring the rural agenda to life on Radio 4, identifying themes for our weekly edition Farming Today This Week and players involved in daily news stories. You will also be expected to output the programme, so programme producing experience is desirable, and you will need to report for Farming Today, so broadcasting skills are also important. As a producer, you may also be require to supervise Assistant Producers or other programme staffs and may also be asked to help complying for the editor.

There may also be opportunities to work on other part of Rural Affairs & Environment Unit, specifically the Food Programme. So any experience of working on long form story telling in similar kind of output would also be an advantage.

Are you the right candidate?

You will have a track record of producing compelling content and possess strong team skills. You will be able to turn round a daily programme quickly and efficiently and respond to a fast changing brief at times or have experience of working on daily programmes. You must be interested in the farming agenda so will need to show that you are familiar with trends, thinking and issues in the food world and ideas about how to make them come alive for listeners. You will be a competent in editing and finessing material..

Criteria
  • Proven knowledge of and interest in the farming world - established contacts, trends, and global issues (food security, sustainability, campaigns, science etc).
  • Proven radio digital editing skills - on Dira Highlander/Sadie
  • Driving licence (travel required).
  • Technical proficiency in audio recording on location
  • Demonstrable experience as a journalist
  • The ability to devise briefs for presenters to create incisive, focussed interviews.
  • Experience producing on location and in studio.
  • Experience of delivering programmes efficiently.
Desirable:
  • Previous broadcast/on air experience
