Phos is looking for a talented Product Designer to join our team in Hatfield, Hertfordshire.
Phos is a highly creative designer & manufacturer of high-end architectural lighting winning several awards in our sector (FX awards / Darc Awards / Lighting Design Awards).
We have created an outstanding range of discreet and powerful miniature luminaires that provide total flexibility of design, exceptional manufacturing quality and high performance. But most importantly, they look amazing!
Using the best and most up-to-date LED technology, our luminaires are designed and assembled in our own production facility. Precision engineered, they incorporate our own unique, often design-registered and patented technology; many parts have purpose-made moulds and dies which are subsequently post machined for a high quality assembled finished product.
Our sophisticated designs are underpinned by our unrivalled expertise and knowledge of metals and lighting techniques. Our lights are engineered to deliver all the benefits of a bespoke product while maintaining great value.
Reporting to the Product Design manager, your regular duties will include:
Product Design support
Ensure that products are of the highest quality possible.
Involved with design briefs from sales effort to deliverables for design execution.
Work as part of a team for product design on multiple projects.
Maintain ongoing project requirements and specifications for multiple projects.
Review design efforts to ensure that quality is being maintained.
Creation and refinement of technical mechanical part and assembly drawings to capture design intent and document the aspects necessary to accomplish the manufacturing goals of a project.
Creation and refinement of complex mechanical components including sourcing.
Management of electrical parts as typically used in the mechanical design models. This includes PCB's, connectors, plugs, layout control models, coordination of BOMs with the technical team.
Creation and maintenance of a Bill of Materials for one or more projects.
Creation, control, and maintenance of release packs and design history files.
Work with Design Manager to review concepts/designs/engineering.
Exercising independent judgment is always required at Phos regardless of what role is being fulfilled. Combine the judgment of multiple Phos team members.
Develop own engineering skill set - learning is a required assignment for all employees.
Quality assurance. Final review of engineering samples prior to handing over to the procurement team.
Keeping up to date with technological advances within the architectural grade lighting market, such as LED chips, optics thermal advances and how these can be incorporated into our components designs.
Experience:
Product Design
Lighting experience - would be an advantage
Phos uses AutoDesk Inventor, so first-hand experience in this or a similar software (such as SolidWorks) is an advantage.
Experience of Adobe Creative Suite is an advantage.
Experience working with many manufacturing processes and materials.
Knowledge of manufacturing quality standards.
Experience of dealing with manufacturing partners.
Product rendering experience using Rhino - would be an advantage

Academic Qualifications:
Degree level - or equivalent.
Background in lighting product design would be an advantage.
Background in either mechanical or electrical/electronic engineering would be preferable.
Experience of dealing with suppliers of CNC/sheet metalworking, die casting /aluminium extrusions/injection moulding.
