The Vacancy:



Purpose of the role:



The role of Machine Shop Manager requires a professional and driven person possessing a high level of technical skills and in-depth knowledge of CNC machining and people management within a precision manufacturing business. Develop TPM, Lean and 5C practices, and drive an environment of continuous improvement by providing staff with the motivation and means to achieve manufacturing excellence.



The Production Manager must articulate the strategy deployment goals for the fiscal year down to the production floor, ensuring that the daily activities add value and work towards improving the Key Performance Indicators (KPI's).



This role requires a constant "finger on the pulse" to understand the current status of the processes. This "pulse" is visualized through scoreboards for each team, or key process, allowing the manager to determine the gaps between the ideal/standard and current situation. This in turn prompts the need for problem solving which they are expected to lead by applying the 'Go see, Ask why, show respect to your people' technique (Going to the Gemba).



What is currently happening? Is there a current standard? Are we tracking? What is the variation? What is the process? Why is this happening?

To be effective, over 50% of the Production Manager's role is to develop their people, while aligning to the goals of the senior management team. This type of development will contribute to the ability of the company to continuously improve and remain competitive in the market.

It is expected that the Production Manager will escalate issues that they cannot resolve promptly to ensure continuation of the processes.



Duties and responsibilities:



Safety

Performs regular Safety Gemba walks and drives out resultant actions. Must familiarise the team with all safety policies and procedures and be accountable for those policies and procedures being adhered to. Address all safety concerns that they become aware of and take necessary steps to remedy in a timely manner. Monitor all accident reports and investigations and create counter measures to eliminate or reduce the risks in the future.

5S

Be the driving force behind the 5S program. Ensure execution of the 5S plan throughout the production shift and mentor the team. Evaluate the 5S condition monthly by observing the process area and follow-up on any actions. Complete any 5S documentation and record as required by the 5S plan.

Communication

Ensure the team is kept up to date with local performance information and company news. Responsible for ensuring that start of shift meetings take place and that the meetings are managed in a timely fashion, including any ideas coming from the opportunities board. Rotate their attendance at different cell meetings daily. Observe and maintain that the operators are adhering to Standardized Work. Check 1 or 2 process work instructions weekly. Identify and eliminate scrap and waste. Gather details and analyse scrapped or NRFT product feeding back information to the Team Leaders. Lead problem-solving efforts to prevent recurrence of the same problems. Direct and facilitate the improvement activity as coach and mentor to the Team Leaders and operators.

Production

Manage all initiatives that reflect the company goals of driving towards world class performance KPI's. See performance measures. Ensure all data collection is supported, collated into various business reports. Check and respond to issues/concerns hour by hour through the relevant process. Respond as third level support to "Andon" calls when needed to avoid a line stop. Drive the coordination of on-the-job training, cross training and management of the skills matrix. Ensure standardised work is captured accurately on WI's. Coordinate shift-to-shift consistency. Proactively take steps to resolve issues/anomalies in the process through coaching or organising basic cause and effect investigations, 5 Whys and fishbone. Escalate issues that cannot be resolved using these tools. Coordinate the tracking of the problem back to the source and analysing the cause and effect to identify "root cause". Coordinate actions to countermeasure the problem root causes, monitor the results and standardize the changes made to correct the problem. Ensure the completion of required paperwork such as production records, charts, quality information and logbook for shift-to-shift communication.

Forecast and Planning

Assist in providing timely forecast/plans for customer quotations. Assist in planning the daily, weekly, monthly, and long-term production activities. Collaborate with Purchasing to ensure required materials are identified and ordered in a timely fashion.

Cost

If a budget is provided ensure spend is kept within set limits. Prepare forecast spends. Prepare Capital Expenditure Request and supporting detail. Ensure that operating supplies are used economically as planned. Coordinate the controlled usage, order, and pick up of operating supplies. Coordinate the tracking and reporting purposes the usage of supplies. Identifying the actual need for overtime and create ways to reduce the need for OT. Ensure the teams are working efficiently and to the required output expectations. If not, identify the reasons and resolve or escalate. Manage Efficiency

Continuous Improvement

Control the current situation to ensure the standardised method is used.



PLAN - DO - CHECK - ACTION:



PLAN: Identify opportunity, analyse cause and formulate countermeasures. DO: Develop, communicate and implement your plan to improve the status. CHECK: Monitor implementation plan and make modification if necessary ACTION: Review/evaluate the results and standardize desirable outcome.

Major Wastes

These forms of waste could have a negative impact on productivity if they are not controlled. The Team Leader must ensure that their team are familiar with and support methods to identify and eliminate waste in the process:



OVERPRODUCTION: Making more parts, at any one time, then are needed at that time. CONVEYANCE: Moving raw material or work in process parts more than absolutely necessary. CORRECTION: Doing the job right the first time, and not having to re-do the task due to making an error. MOTION: Movement of material, equipment or people that doesn't add value WAITING: People or operations idle due to lack of materials, parts, supplies INVENTORY: Excess raw material, work-in-process or finished goods on hand due to overproduction or a material flow system out of synchronization. OVER PROCESSING: Adding more value to the part than is necessary.

People

Manage the administration of the attendance policy and procedure consistently. Ensure all team members understand policy and procedure. Record the attendance at the beginning of the shift and report attendance status on monthly reports. Ensure any planned absenteeism has contingency also planned. Ensure the timely completion of annual employee appraisals, including any coaching requirements. Ensure that scheduled stops (breaks/lunches/comms meetings) are managed consistently. Resolve unscheduled stops quickly. Coordinate the creation of alternative operator activities for planned stops, e.g. maintenance.

Customer returns linked to poor production or escapes. On time delivery to planned time. Quantity of parts delivered against plan quantity. Lead time. Efficiency. Overtime. Budgetary expenditure. Timeliness. Absenteeism. Skills Flexibility. Induction time for new employees. Management of subordinates.

Person Specification:



Qualifications - Essential

HNC/HND/Degree level qualification in Manufacturing / Ops Management / Engineering.

Experience - Essential

Managerial and leadership experience. Manufacturing / Production industry experience. Practical problem-solving skills and track record of KPI improvement. Experience and ability to read and understand technical drawings, Process Instructions, Manufacturing Instructions and Generics. Process costing and new process implementation skills. Lean manufacturing. Proven track record of cost savings and productivity improvements. Forecasting, planning and budgeting forecast. Route cause analysis experience.

Experience - Desirable

Machining experience.

Technical Knowledge - Essential

PC literacy, including spreadsheets, database and presentations. MRP/ERP system knowledge. Knowledge of lean tools and applications. Knowledge of manufacturing processes. Health and Safety knowledge and experience.

Technical Knowledge - Desirable

Amphenol product knowledge. XA Infor knowledge.

Skills and Competencies - Essential
