About the Role
Leonard Cheshire is seeking an outstanding
Programme Management Director (PMD)
to establish and lead our central
Programme Management Office (PMO)
. This is a newly created high-impact leadership role at the heart of our strategic delivery -- ensuring that every major project is aligned, well-governed, and delivering measurable value for the people and communities we support.
Reporting to the
Executive Director, Governance
, and working closely with the
CEO
and
Trustees
, you will set the standards and frameworks that define how we manage transformation across the organisation. You will provide independent assurance and challenge, oversee the performance of our strategic portfolio, and ensure that investment decisions are informed, transparent, and evidence based.

Company Secretary, Governance Lead and Chief Executive Officer
Key Responsibilities
Establish and lead the central PMO, embedding clear frameworks, tools, and disciplines for programme and project management.
Provide independent oversight of all strategic projects, ensuring alignment with organisational priorities and risk appetite.
Deliver authoritative insight and reporting to the Executive and Board on progress, risks, and benefits realisation.
Advise on project prioritisation, investment, and resource allocation to maximise impact and sustainability.
Drive continuous improvement by embedding lessons learned and strengthening governance across the portfolio.
Build capability and confidence in project and programme management through coaching, training, and partnership.
About You
You are a confident, strategic leader with the credibility to influence at Executive and Board level and the discipline to deliver excellence in governance and assurance. You combine analytical rigour with clear, persuasive communication and have a track record of establishing PMOs that drive transformation and measurable results.
Essential:
Proven experience leading a PMO or major programme portfolio in a complex organisation.
Deep understanding of governance, risk, and assurance frameworks.
Strong financial literacy, with the ability to track budgets, benefits, and ROI.
Excellent judgement and the authority to make independent recommendations to senior stakeholders.
Exceptional communication and reporting skills, with the ability to distil complexity into clarity.
Genuine alignment with the values and mission of Leonard Cheshire.
Desirable:
Experience in the charity, health, or social care sector.
Familiarity with UK charity governance and regulatory requirements.
Recognised programme/project management qualification (e.g. MSP, PRINCE2, APM).
