PROJECT TECHNICIAN

The Company

Cornish Metals is an AIM listed Company working towards re-opening the 100% owned and fully permitted South Crofty underground tin mine in Pool, Cornwall.

In March 2025, we raised 57.4 million, anchored by the UK's National Wealth Fund and Vision Blue Resources to advance South Crofty towards tin production once again. Tin is essential for electronics, renewable energy, and modern technology and demand is projected to increase by 30% in the next decade.

Role purpose

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Site Engineer to manage day-to-day operations on-site, ensure project deliverables meet quality standards and timelines, and support the successful execution of engineering and construction activities. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, technically skilled, and capable of coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure smooth project progression.

The position is offered on a fixed-term basis until June 2028, with the potential to extend depending project requirements.

Principle responsibilities/role tasks

Specific duties as part of the role include, but are not limited to, the following:-

Ensure health and safety protocols are always followed on-site. Oversee and manage daily on-site activities, ensuring safety, quality, and compliance with project specifications. Coordinate with site team, subcontractors, consultants, and suppliers to ensure accurate implementation of plans. Monitor construction progress and provide regular updates to project management. Interpret technical drawings, plans, and specifications to guide construction efforts. Conduct site inspections and ensure adherence to design. Maintain accurate records, including daily site reports, logs, and as-built documentation. Resolve any technical or logistical site-related issues promptly and efficiently. Support the procurement of materials and ensure timely delivery to the site. Participate in project meetings and provide input on technical solutions and improvements. Basic setting out skills (familiar with use of GPS and Total Station) welcomed.

Working Environment

This role involves a combination of office and field-based activities, on a project with industrial surface construction and underground mining components.

This is an on-site role based at South Crofty mine. It will involve regular movement around the site, including underground, for meetings, training and project related activities as well as occasional external meetings across the UK.

Key relationships

The role will report to the Senior Project Engineer, but there will be frequent interaction with the Engineering and Project Manager, and the Project Director.

The role will also involve working closely with Cornish Metals technical staff (underground and surface) involved in the ongoing project activities and mine dewatering and shaft refurbishment project.

External relationships will include construction contractors, equipment suppliers, and engineers.

Skills and experience

The key skills and experience which are expected for this role are:

Essential

Bachelor's degree in construction engineering, or a related field. 2-5 years of experience in a site engineering or construction role (experience level may vary based on the job grade). Experience in construction projects is preferred. Technical knowledge of construction methods, materials, and legal regulations. Ability to read technical drawings, plans, and schematics Problem-solving and decision-making skills Understanding of site health & safety regulations Proficient in using AutoCAD and Microsoft Package Excellent organisational, problem-solving, and communication skills. Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality. Strong communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively with project teams and stakeholders. Willingness to be site-based in Cornwall for the duration of the contract. Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities Strong communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work in a predominately standalone capacity while also working with all areas of the workforce Demonstrate a positive, proactive approach and show high levels of initiative. Current driving licence, or alternative ability to efficiently undertake the duties of the role and reliably travel to site.
Desirable

Experience with surveying equipment Professional Engineering License or equivalent certification. CSCS SMSTS or SSSTS Health & Safety certifications (e.g., OSHA, NEBOSH). Previous experience of working in a company in the extractive, construction or industrial sectors Be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint) etc.

Hours of work and work location

Fixed term,full time 37.5 hours a week, Monday to Friday between 8:00am and 4:00pm, based at the South Crofty Mine site in Pool, Redruth. The role may occasionally require availability outside standard working hours to support operation activities and other events.
