Reporting to the Purchasing Manager, the Purchaser is responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and buying

goods, materials and services to meet operational requirements, taking into consideration, price, quality,

delivery and continuity of supply.

Key Responsibilities



Purchasing & Stock Management

Manage purchasing activities in line with Production and Commercial forecasts, ensuring stock availability without over-purchasing. Use medium- and long-term planning data to maintain optimal stock levels and support operational needs. Raise and process purchase orders, maintain accurate purchasing records, and produce reports and metrics. Review and adjust minimum stock levels, lead times, and standard costings to reflect actual performance and costs. Identify cost-saving opportunities and contribute to stock value and margin targets. Collaborate with R&D to select and source components, resolve supplier and component issues, and manage obsolescence.

Supplier Management

Build and maintain effective supplier relationships, supporting supplier reviews, audits, and exhibitions. Monitor supplier performance through KPIs and monthly reporting, escalating concerns where necessary. Proactively expedite orders and address delivery, quality, or performance issues. Negotiate pricing, quality, and delivery terms to meet business objectives. Support new product introductions and identify subcontracting opportunities for assemblies or builds.

Continuous Improvement & Compliance

Drive continuous improvement across purchasing and supply chain processes. Support commercial teams with product costing, margins, and lead-time insights. Stay informed of market trends, supplier developments, and industry advancements. Maintain up-to-date records for supplier and component compliance (e.g. RoHS, conflict minerals, code of conduct).


Skills, Knowledge and Expertise





Purchasing and Stock

: Must have prior experience of purchasing and managing stock to avoid excess surpluses and make effective use of existing stock.

Electronic Components (Desirable)

: Understanding of electronic components and ability to interpret technical specifications, datasheets, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).

Supplier Management

: Able to build and maintain effective supplier relationships; experience of sourcing, negotiating, and managing suppliers, with a focus on cost, lead times, quality, and long-term supplier relationships.

Forecasting and Reporting

: Experience converting sales demand and forecast information into a planned ordering/delivery schedule. Reporting weekly shortages against build plans, and longer-term end of life/supply issues. Monthly reporting on supplier performance and department commitments.

Collaboration

: Able to work collaboratively across the Operations Department and wider business

Communication

: Able to communicate information concisely to internal stakeholders regarding late delivery of components, understands the related commercial implications, and offers mitigation strategies where possible.

Proactive

: Able to identify threats and take appropriate action before problems arise. Forward planner to ensure supplies arrive sufficiently in advance of need.

MRP Systems and IT Skills

: Can effectively use an MRP system to coordinate the arrival of components and materials. Good experience of Microsoft Office, specifically Outlook for managing a group inbox, and Excel for calculations and communicating ordering plans.
