Purpose of the Role
The Registered Manager will be responsible for the leadership, management, and day-to-day running of a children's residential home, ensuring the highest standards of care, safety, and outcomes for children and young people. The role requires full compliance with the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015, the Quality Standards, and all relevant statutory guidance.
The postholder will create a safe, nurturing, and therapeutic environment where children can thrive, recover from trauma, and achieve their potential.
Key Responsibilities
Hold and maintain Ofsted registration as the Registered Manager for the home.
Provide clear, visible, and accountable leadership to the staff team.
Embed a child-centred culture that promotes safety, stability, and positive outcomes.
Ensure the home meets or exceeds "Good" or "Outstanding" Ofsted ratings.
Develop and implement policies, procedures, and operational plans in line with legislation and best practice.
Quality & Compliance
Ensure full compliance with the Children's Homes Regulations 2015 and the Quality Standards.
Prepare for and lead the home through Ofsted inspections, audits, and internal quality assurance processes.
Maintain accurate, timely, and secure records for children, staff, and operational matters.
Monitor and evaluate the quality of care, implementing continuous improvement plans.
Safeguarding & Risk Management
Act as the Designated Safeguarding Lead for the home.
Ensure safeguarding policies and procedures are fully implemented and understood by all staff.
Oversee risk assessments for children, staff, and the environment, ensuring appropriate control measures are in place.
Respond promptly and effectively to safeguarding concerns, incidents, and complaints.
Staff Management & Development
Recruit, induct, and retain a skilled, motivated, and resilient staff team.
Provide regular supervision, appraisals, and performance management.
Identify training needs and ensure all mandatory and developmental training is completed.
Promote staff wellbeing and a supportive team culture.
Children & Young People
Ensure each child has an up-to-date, personalised care plan that reflects their needs, wishes, and aspirations.
Promote independence, resilience, and positive life skills.
Build trusting relationships with children, advocating for their rights and needs.
Ensure children's voices are heard and influence decision-making in the home.
Partnership Working
Work collaboratively with social workers, local authorities, health professionals, education providers, and families.
Represent the home at professional meetings and reviews.
Maintain positive relationships with the local community.
Financial & Resource Management
Manage the home's budget effectively, ensuring financial sustainability.
Oversee the procurement and maintenance of resources, ensuring value for money.
Monitor staffing levels and deployment to meet operational and regulatory requirements.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (England) or equivalent (or willingness to complete within 18 months).
Proven experience as a Registered Manager or Deputy Manager in a children's residential setting.
In-depth knowledge of the Children's Homes Regulations 2015, Quality Standards, and Ofsted inspection framework.
Strong leadership, organisational, and communication skills.
Demonstrable experience in safeguarding and risk management.
Ability to manage challenging situations calmly and effectively.
Desirable
Experience opening and registering a new children's home.
Knowledge of therapeutic care models and trauma-informed practice.
Experience working with children with emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD).
Additional Information
This is a full-time role requiring flexibility, including participation in an on-call rota.
An enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references are required prior to appointment.
