We are looking for an innovative and motivated Research Scientist to join our Geoscience R&D team!

Reporting to the R&D Manager, you will contribute to the advancement of geoscience and laboratory techniques across a variety of sectors, including environmental science, mining and minerals, CCS, geothermal, and oil & gas. You will work with a team of talented scientists to develop new workflows and technologies that differentiate CGG, enhance efficiency, and provide unique value propositions.

As a Researcher you will be responsible for critically evaluating current standard methodologies while actively staying informed about emerging and experimental techniques. You will have the opportunity to work both independently and as part of a diverse and multidisciplinary team. While the role is primarily based at CGG\'s Geology Lab in North Wales and offices in Llandudno, we are open to considering hybrid/remote working arrangements. Occasional travel within the UK or abroad, particularly for conferences, may be required.

Principle Accountabilities

  • Support experimental and analytical geology and environmental-based R&D, including project management, sample preparation, data acquisition, analysis, integration, and result dissemination.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with geoscientists, data scientists, research scientists, technical laboratory staff, and specialists.
  • Develop technology-based analytical techniques and workflows through experimentation, innovation, and staying updated with the latest advancements.
  • Critically evaluate internal methods and workflows, problem-solve, and provide guidance for improvement to the team.
  • Conduct regular scientific literature studies to enhance workflow development, analysis, and result interpretation.
  • Shape and implement the Geology team\'s strategy, providing integrated geological/environmental datasets and analyses to stakeholders, including supporting internal thematic and applied groups within CGG.
  • Create intellectual property (IP), publish research, and present findings at conferences.
  • Seek and secure commercial opportunities to apply CGG and Geology Labs\' expertise and techniques.
  • Identify investment opportunities in new analytical instruments to differentiate CGG and foster the creation of new IP.
  • Ensure the use of cutting-edge technology and data analytics in methodologies and results.
  • Collaborate with universities, students, and external projects, establishing partnerships as needed.
  • Contribute to research proposals and actively pursue research funding.
  • Promote knowledge transfer and facilitate the professional growth of team members in new areas.
This is a 12-month fixed-term contract with the potential for permanent employment.

Qualifications

Educated to PhD degree level in any of the following disciplines: Geoscience, Chemistry or Environmental Science. Masters degree will also be considered with sufficient research experience.

Skills and Experiences
  • Advanced problem-solving skills, with a strong focus on continuously improving standard practices and developing innovative techniques.
  • Proficiency in scientific analysis and the ability to comprehend complex scientific concepts.
  • Exceptional scientific writing skills.
  • Proven track record of publishing in reputable journals and presenting at conferences.
  • Laboratory experience in geological, chemical, or environmental settings, preferably within sectors such as environmental analysis, mining and minerals, CCS, geothermal, or oil & gas, ideally in a research capacity.
  • Self-assurance and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong motivation to work with real data, tackle real-world challenges, and deliver cutting-edge technological solutions to clients.
  • Effective project management and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Open communication and collaborative mindset when working with teams and clients.
  • Enthusiasm for continuous learning and adaptability to embrace new challenges or shifts in direction.
  • Desirable: Proficiency in programming, data science, statistics, or related skills.
