Do you have a passion for working in the construction industry and would like to become a valuable member of the Highways Maintenance Service?
The Highways Maintenance Service maintains and repairs over 500 miles of road and 800 miles of footpaths within Leicester City. We undertake construction of major public realm schemes to improve the pedestrian and transport network within the City Centre, as well as providing winter service and gully cleaning services in the city.
Join us as a Skilled Roadworker in our team of highway professionals, who lay paving materials and tarmac, as well as carrying out general manual/labouring tasks involved in the construction, maintenance and repair of highways, sewers, and watercourses including roads, footpaths, and drainage features.
Based at our offices at 90 Leycroft Road, you'll work on site anywhere within the city and occasionally further afield. It is essential you have a full driving licence with category C1 or C1E to be able to drive a 7.5 tonne vehicle, or alternatively have a Class 1 or 2 HGV licence.
This is a full-time permanent role, working 37 hours per week. Hours of work are 7.30am - 3.30pm, Monday to Thursday and 7.30am - 3.00pm on Fridays. However, you must be willing to work overtime to suit the operational needs of the unit, e.g. additional weekday hours and weekend working.
This is a career graded post (LG Band 4 to LG Band 5). Appointment to a level will depend on the outcome of the selection process and experience of the successful candidate. Dependent on availability of work/ vacancy at the higher level, progress will be by satisfactory performance, agreed at annual appraisals and through on-going supervision.
What you'll be doing
You'll work closely in a team and under the guidance of the Contracts Supervisor to lay and rake tarmac/bituminous surfacing by hand or machine to high precision and tight tolerances. You'll confidently use power-assisted tools, minor plant, and machinery as well as drive, clean and carry out routine maintenance of vehicles and plant. You'll plan and prioritise work activities to ensure the productivity targets are achieved, whilst ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements such as Health & Safety, Works Specifications.
What you'll need
As an experienced Roadworker, you'll have the skills to produce a good surface finish free from roller marks and undertake setting out and marking up of accurate lines and levels. You'll have a good understanding of health, safety and environmental requirements and safe working procedures. You'll have working knowledge of construction specifications, materials, compaction, and workmanship requirements in different disciplines. With good numeracy skills, you'll be able to carry out measurements and calculate quantities e.g. areas, volumes, weights. You'll be able to follow instructions and complete relevant paperwork such as timesheets and worksheets. Using good communication and interpersonal skills, you'll be able to deal effectively with customers as well as work colleagues.
