Scenic Operations Manager - Technical Production Live Events
Blue Elephant is seeking an experienced and ambitious leader to establish and manage our entire Scenic Operations department. This pivotal role combines the strategic delivery of scenic elements for high-profile AV events with the hands-on leadership of our workshop team and production processes.
Salary: 50,000 to 60,000 per annum, depending on experience
Role Purpose
Working closely with the Projects Team, Scenic carpenters and the wider team, this role is responsible for leading, developing, and managing the entire Scenic department, encompassing both project delivery and workshop operations.
Primary Goal: To build and lead a highly efficient and commercially focused Scenic team, ensuring seamless delivery of a vast array of scenic and custom-build elements for live events.
Key Responsibilities
1. Department Leadership & Commercial Management
Lead the growth and development of the Scenic department and team.
Provide precise costings for projects, ensuring all commercial targets are met.
Offer input and advice on materials, design, and pricing (stock and custom) to other internal departments.
Propose cost-effective and sustainable solutions for all scenic designs.
2. Project Delivery & Technical Production
Collaborate with clients and internal teams to turn design concepts into manufacturable scenic elements.
Create technical drawings and plans to support manufacturing and project execution.
Research and source high-quality, suitable, and sustainable materials.
Oversee all print and graphics production.
Manage on-site installations, including being hands-on when required.
Create and maintain essential documentation (timelines, H&S files, production briefs).
3. Workshop & Operations Management
Manage the day-to-day operations and resources of the workshop and scenic warehouse teams.
Supervise the construction of custom builds and the preparation of all scenic stock items.
Maintain a high level of health and safety across all workshop operations.
Manage the stock of all tools, materials, and consumables.
Oversee the maintenance of all workshop machinery and tools.
Work closely with internal teams to guarantee smooth, end-to-end project delivery.
Person Specification
Proven experience in scenic build within the events, theatre, or exhibition industry.
Strong technical knowledge of scenic materials and construction methods.
Highly organised, comfortable interpreting client designs, and adept at stakeholder management.
Experienced in leading, developing, and managing a team.
Proficient in technical drawing software (e.g., Vectorworks, Sketch, or AutoCAD).
Able to maintain a calm, methodical approach when working under pressure and tight deadlines.
