Do you enjoy working as part of a dedicated team committed to delivering high standards? We are currently seeking Cleansing and Refuse Operatives to join our teams in Whitby and Scarborough.
As a Refuse/Cleansing Operative, you will play a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of public spaces. Working as part of a supportive team, your duties will include litter picking, emptying street bins, graffiti removal, and cleaning public conveniences. You will help ensure that our pavements, footpaths, and pedestrian areas remain clean, safe, and welcoming for residents, businesses, and visitors.
In small crews across your designated area, you will also collect residual waste, garden waste, food waste, and recyclables from domestic properties. The role involves moving bags, wheelie bins, and recycling bins, and operating a lifting mechanism to load waste into refuse vehicles. Health and safety are central to everything we do--you will assist drivers in safely navigating the streets of North Yorkshire, helping to protect both your team and the wider community.
This is a front-line role in the North Yorkshire Council, and you will be one of the key representatives of the council's commitment to quality services. Early starts and weekend working may be required to meet operational demands.
Additional responsibilities include supporting activities during flood events by distributing sandbags and assisting with the investigation of illegal waste dumping to aid fly-tipping prosecutions. You will also receive training to work behind a refuse collection truck to further support operational needs.
Key Details:
Shifts are five days per week, including one weekend day
Shift times range between 6:00 am and 10:00 pm
An additional 30 payment is provided for each weekend day worked
