Introduction
Are you resilient, compassionate, and curious about how young people grow and learn? Do you have the patience and empathy to work with learners facing emotional and mental health challenges? At New Meaning Training (NMT), we're looking for an SEMH Support Worker to join our team and help shape a positive future for learners aged 15-25 who have struggled in traditional education settings.
This role is based primarily at our Stratford-upon-Avon centre, where you will work closely with a small, dedicated team to provide targeted, trauma-informed support to learners with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. You may also be expected to travel to our other NMT centre in Nuneaton when required.
Using our Loving Care Approach--a trauma-informed model rooted in empathy and structure--you'll help learners build emotional resilience, re-engage with learning, and develop the confidence to pursue their goals. Whether you're working one-to-one, in small groups, or alongside tutors, you'll be part of a compassionate and learner-focused environment, helping young people overcome barriers and move forward with purpose.
You will have
Experience working with young people with SEMH and/or SEND needs
Strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport quickly
Confidence in managing challenging behaviour and de-escalating situations calmly
A good understanding of safeguarding procedures and current social issues (e.g. County Lines, Prevent)
Ability to work independently and flexibly, including planning your own interventions
Experience delivering 1:1 or small group support sessions
Good organisational skills and accurate record-keeping
A creative, learner-centred approach to support
Proficient use of Microsoft Office
Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to apply)
Business vehicle insurance (or willingness to obtain it)
Key Responsibilities
Build consistent, nurturing relationships with young people
Deliver targeted SEMH interventions based on EHCP outcomes
Support learners' emotional wellbeing, resilience, and confidence in learning
Work 1:1 or in small groups to deliver practical life skills and wellbeing sessions
Use trauma-informed strategies to support behaviour and engagement
Adapt lesson content to meet individual learner needs
Keep accurate records and maintain a clear intervention diary
Work closely with tutors to help meet EHCP outcomes
Encourage learner attendance, participation and personal progress
Contribute to creative team planning for hard-to-engage learners
Deliver engaging tutorials focused on mental health, self-regulation, and independence
Stay up to date with relevant legislation and complete training provided by NMT
Work in full accordance with NMT's safeguarding protocols
About Us
New Meaning Training (NMT) offers education with a difference. We are an alternative education provider committed to helping young people aged 15-25 find their confidence, identify their strengths, and build a meaningful future.
For the 2025-2026 academic year, we'll welcome around 300 learners across our centres in Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands and Berkshire. Many of these learners have EHCPs and come to us through local authorities, PRUs, or mainstream school referrals.
We offer a diverse range of learning programmes: Construction Multiskills, Motor Mechanics, Creative Art & Design, Computing, Sports, Hair & Beauty, Catering, Childcare, Boost Workskills, and Achieve Lifeskills. Not all programmes are available at every location, but all incorporate functional skills qualifications in Maths and English, along with tutorials to support our well-rounded approach. We also provide a 'Transition Support' programme for young people with EHCPs who are not yet ready for a learning setting.
We apply trauma-informed practice through our Loving Care Approach, ensuring all learners are supported with empathy, structure, and care.
