SALARY:

ROLE TYPE:

HOURS:

People come to Northern for trains they can rely on - and that starts long before they set foot on board. Behind the scenes, our maintenance teams make sure every train is safe, clean, and ready to run, keeping our network moving and our customers happy.

As part of this team, you'll help us look after our fleet - keeping things running smoothly, spotting issues before they become problems, and making sure our trains leave the depot in top condition. It's hands-on work that makes a real difference every day.

What you'll be doing

You'll be part of a busy, fast-paced environment where no two days are the same. Here's what your role could include:

Maintaining and servicing our trains to make sure they're safe and ready for service. Fuelling and tanking trains so they can head out on time. Carrying out external cleaning and preparation work to support maintenance tasks. Assisting skilled Engineers in keeping our diesel fleet in great shape. Following health and safety standards and procedures - keeping yourself and others safe. Taking an active role in your own training and development as you learn the ropes.

You'll work shifts, including early mornings, late nights, weekends and Bank Holidays, so flexibility is key. You'll also need to live within 60 minutes' drive of your TrainCare Centre.

About you

You don't need an engineering qualification - we'll give you all the training you need. What matters most is your curiosity, willingness to learn, and pride in doing a great job.

A few things you'll bring to the role:

Basic technical skills - whether that's mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or general hands-on experience. A commitment to safety and following procedures. A calm, can-do attitude when things get busy or plans change. Teamwork - you'll be working closely with others to keep everything running smoothly. Great communication skills and the confidence to speak up when something doesn't look right.

You'll also need to pass a safety-critical medical assessment, including checks on general health, vision, hearing, colour vision, and drugs and alcohol.

What's in it for you?

Why Northern?

We're more than just a train operator. We're the heartbeat of the North - connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we're on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe - and this year, we're celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.

At Northern, we don't just move people from A to B - we're building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that's something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we'll always offer an interview.

We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.

No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob... there's a place for you here in the railway.
