Job Purpose
Under the direction of the Leader, the S.E.N. Assistant will assist with the educational support and the care of the pupil with special educational needs who is in the settings care in the pre-school.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Assist the leader with the support and care of pupil(s) with Special Educational Needs e.g. enable access to the curriculum, attend to personal needs including dietary, feeding, toileting etc.
Assist pupils learning as effectively as possible both in group situations and on their own by assisting with the management of the learning environment through:
o Clarifying and explaining instruction.
o Ensuring the pupil is able to use equipment and materials provided.
o Assisting in motivating and encouraging the pupil as required.
o Promoting the independence of pupil to enhance their learning.
o Meeting physical/medical needs as required while encouraging independence.
Keep strictly confidential any personal information regarding the children, their families or other staff which has been gaining as part of the job.
Be aware of the pre-school policies and procedures.
Provide continuity of care e.g. supervising play and cloakrooms including washing hands, toileting etc.
Provide supervision/support including the administration of prescribed medicines for child/children if they are ill and deal with minor cuts and grazes.
Provide a safe and welcoming environment for the pupil(s).
Report to the leader any signs or symptoms displayed which may suggest that the pupil(s) requires expert or immediate attention.
Carry out regular observations, Individual Educational Plans and assess the child/children designated to you by the pre-school leader.
Provide regular feedback about the pupil(s) to the leader.
Take part in special events and group outings.
Engage with parents positively to ensure the overall needs of the child are met with all of the above and encourage parental involvement.
Other duties may include attending relevant training, liaising with other professionals e.g. speech and language therapist, educations psychologist etc.
This job description will be subject to review in light of changing circumstances and is not intended to be rigid and inflexible but should be regarded as providing guidelines within which the individual works. Other duties of similar nature and appropriate to the persons level may be assigned from time to time.
The Post involves work in an educational setting and are subject to the provisions of the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (NI) Order 2007. The successful applicant will require an enhanced disclosure. Further details regarding the payment of this check will be issued with the contract of employment.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Candidates must hold a minimum Level 2 CCLD qualification or be in the process of obtaining a qualification (evidence of enrolment in a relevant childcare course must also be provided).
Have a minimum of 6 months experience in working with a child/children in an educational learning enviroment e.g. school, nursery or pre-school.
Have an understanding of child development.
Have some ability to complete daily observations and reflect on child/children's learning needs and use this knowledge to impact on children's learning outcomes e.g. planning, Individual Education Plans.
Ability to work independently using own initiative.
Desirable Criteria
Have a level 3 CCLD qualification (Children's Care, Learning and Development)
Have some experience of working with children with S.E.N.
Experience of working as part of a team.
Effective oral communication skills.

Work time:
12 hours 30 minutes (Hours per Week) TERM TIME ONLY
Contract from September to March, with the potential for extension from April to June, subject to funding.
9.30am-12.00pm (Monday to Friday inclusive)
