SEN Teaching Assistant - Year 5 | Challenging Behaviour | Up to 105/day

Medium-term role until specialist placement is secured



We are seeking an experienced Learning Assistant to provide dedicated support for a Year 5 pupil with significant social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs. This is a demanding but rewarding role for someone confident, resilient, and passionate about helping children with complex needs to regulate, re-engage, and build self-esteem.

The successful candidate will need to balance structure with creativity, ensuring the pupil feels supported, understood, and able to access learning both in and out of the classroom.

The Role

Work 1:1 with a Year 5 pupil with challenging behaviour awaiting specialist school placement. Support both in and out of the classroom, ensuring the pupil remains active, safe, and positively engaged. Respond to signs of anxiety or dysregulation early, helping to de-escalate situations before they escalate. When dysregulated, the pupil may: ignore instructions, refuse to move, kick furniture, or self-harm. You will need to remain calm, positive, and consistent in your response. Provide creative, playful activities that help the pupil regulate emotions, rebuild self-esteem, and prepare to rejoin learning with peers.
Person Specification

Strong background in supporting children with

SEMH and challenging behaviour

. Confident, resilient, and physically mobile. Emotionally literate and able to spot early triggers of dysregulation. Experienced in using de-escalation techniques; restraint training is desirable. Patient, persistent, and positive with excellent behaviour management skills. Able to develop trust quickly and foster a supportive relationship.
