Job Description


London Office of a large international bank that is based in the City requires a senior lawyer to support the Head of Legal on several bank-wide risk projects and compliance including Cross Border and Regionalisation and working together with the HOD to devise a comprehensive Legal Risk Framework. Advising the Bank\'s core business functions regarding cross-border deals. Providing legal advisory support to the Bank\'s DCM business on a limited number of transactional matters, when required. Overseeing the General Commercial Team and providing the team with senior support and guidance on strategic matters and projects, including the new Consumer Duty.

The legal department supports a wide range of matters including, among others, retail, wholesale and corporate banking, capital markets, general commercial, property, regulatory advisory, litigation and regulatory enforcement, data privacy, property, and employment law. Legal currently comprises members with both general and specialist knowledge. The Team is very busy and is regularly called to assist on bank-wide projects and initiatives alongside business-as-usual legal work. Business partnering and a collaborative approach within the Team is key as is managing a demanding workload whilst assisting the Team to further build the necessary legal risk management infrastructure.

This is a hands-on role in a collegiate team where you will have regular interface with the UK based senior management and more senior management based in Asia.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Leading on the Bank\'s cross border project and cross border business advisory work
  • Supporting HOD with the Bank\'s regionalisation project
  • Partnering with Compliance Advisory and Risk Management Department in relation to compliance and risk matters
  • Supporting Head of Department with developing a legal risk framework, including drafting relevant policies and procedures, and risk assessments
  • Business partnering with Debt Capital Markets centre, plus other core business units as may be necessary.
  • Overseeing the General Commercial Team, not as an SME but to give support and guidance on certain key projects, e.g., new Consumer Duty
  • Advising and supporting business on a range of legal and regulatory issues
  • Able to advise on the regulatory framework as it applies to the BOC UK, London Branch and the products and services.
  • Representing Legal and supporting HOD at various risk and compliance committees, such as Compliance Committee and Operational Risk Committee
  • Assisting HOD with any other tasks as may be required from time to time.
Supervision Responsibilities
  • Two direct reports in the General Commercial Team
Person Specification
  • Senior lawyer with in-house legal team experience in banking industry or a secondment in-house
  • Lawyers from private practice with the aptitude for in-house will also be given equal consideration.
  • Able to work in-house with a mix of professionals and stakeholders, in a fast-paced environment.
