We are seeking an experienced process chemist and experienced matrix team leader to join the Process Chemistry group within Chemical Research and Development (CRD) in Kent, UK. Working within our state-of-the-art laboratories at Sandwich, your role will be to lead matrix teams in the research, design and development of robust, scalable and efficient chemical processes, to transfer the developed technology to scale-up facilities in the support of manufacture of active pharmaceuticals ingredients (API\'s), to oversee technology transfer to commercial manufacturing, and to contribute to regulatory submission with global health authorities.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead matrix teams in the design, development and scale-up of new and existing routes to pharmaceuticals. Align activities across process chemists, process engineers, crystallisation experts, process safety scientists, analysts and scale-up facility staff to develop right-first-time high quality processes. Apply prior knowledge and experience, literature, and computational tools to lead route, reaction and experimental design.
  • Provide expertise in process chemistry: Safe and efficient practical laboratory execution to support the design of experiments, the identification and optimisation of reactions, the design and development of workups and isolations, and the analysis and characterisation of products. Application of innovative chemistries and technologies, continuous and batch unit operations, and statistical experimental design approaches in a laboratory setting.
  • Accurately record and document experimental work, and present work clearly and concisely to stakeholders, both internally and externally, through written and verbal communications. Effectively project manage development and manufacturing plans for API from early clinical development through to commercial launch.
  • Lead key initiatives for CRD to drive continuous improvement work in the department and advance the Process Chemistry discipline through technology, workflow or business impact.
  • Lead regulatory submission authoring as well as technology transfer documentation to research and commercial manufacturing sites.
  • Drive external alliances to advance key technologies aligned with API development and manufacture.
You will lead matrix teams across Chemical R&D including High-Throughput Screening, Process Engineers, Process Safety, Crystallisation Technologists, Analytical, Regulatory and Manufacturing colleagues at Sandwich and other Global Pfizer sites. Externally you will engage with other pharmaceutical companies, external consultants & contractors to lead best practice.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Master\xe2\x80\x99s/Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Chemistry or a related subject as a minimum, or candidates with an organic chemistry based postgraduate qualification.
  • Capable of demonstrating long-standing (or significant) experience in process chemistry and team leadership, and the ability to demonstrate proficiency and exposure to most aspects of this role.
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
  • State of the art knowledge of modern synthetic methodology, including application to retrosynthesis and route design, asymmetric synthesis, sustainable chemistry, catalysis, and physical organic chemistry as it relates to reaction mechanism.
  • State of the art knowledge of process chemistry, including route design, process design, technical transfer of APIs to manufacturing plants and regulatory submission across global health authorities.
  • Proven application of theoretical knowledge in the laboratory and proficient in a wide range of organic synthesis and characterization techniques. Broad knowledge of process chemistry requirements in the selection of reagents and solvents, and design of reactions, work-ups and isolations.
  • The ability to employ analytical tools, computational and statistical methodology, and automated laboratory technologies to enhance process development efficiency, including awareness of process analytical technologies.
  • Ability to apply learnings to new situations and opportunities, demonstrating sound judgement in decision making. Rational, innovative and creative approach to problem solving.
  • Capable of leading and planning the scientific direction of multi-discipline projects. Able to work collaboratively and effectively and lead high performing teams. Ability to mentor and direct other colleagues providing technical guidance.
