We are seeking a synthetic organic chemist with experience of flow chemistry and continuous unit operations to join the Process Chemistry group within Chemical Research and Development (CRD) in Kent, UK. Working within our state-of-the-art laboratories at Sandwich, your role will be to research, design and develop robust, scalable and efficient chemical processes and to transfer the developed technology to scale-up facilities in the support of manufacture of active pharmaceuticals ingredients (API\'s).

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, develop and scale-up of new and existing routes to pharmaceuticals. Build strong partnerships with process engineers, crystallisation experts, process safety scientists, analysts and scale-up facility staff to develop right-first-time high quality processes. Apply prior knowledge and experience, literature, and computational tools to support route, reaction and experimental design.
  • Practical synthetic organic chemistry: Safe and efficient practical laboratory execution to support the design of experiments, the identification and optimisation of reactions, the design and development of workups and isolations, and the analysis and characterisation of products. Application of innovative chemistries and technologies, continuous and batch unit operations, and statistical experimental design approaches in a laboratory setting.
  • Accurately record and document experimental work, and present work clearly and concisely to stakeholders, both internally and externally, through written and verbal communications.
  • The successful candidate would also participate in key initiatives for CRD and contribute to continuous improvement work in the department and advancement of the Process Chemistry discipline through technology, workflow or business impact.
  • May contribute to regulatory submission authoring as well as technology transfer documentation to research and commercial manufacturing sites.
You will liaise with other Chemical R&D Colleagues including High-Throughput Screening, Process Engineers, Process Safety, Crystallisation Technologists, Analytical, Regulatory and Manufacturing colleagues at Sandwich and other Global Pfizer sites. Externally you may have contact with other pharmaceutical companies, external consultants & contractors.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Master\xe2\x80\x99s/Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Chemistry or a related subject as a minimum.
  • We welcome candidates capable of demonstrating long-standing (or significant) experience in process chemistry with continuous experience; or candidates with a continuous organic chemistry based postgraduate qualification and the ability to demonstrate proficiency and exposure to most aspects of this role.
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
  • State of the art knowledge of modern synthetic methodology, including application to retrosynthesis and route design, asymmetric synthesis, sustainable chemistry, catalysis, and physical organic chemistry as it relates to reaction mechanism.
  • State of the art knowledge of flow chemistry, continuous unit operations and continuous principles such as residence time, residence time distribution and steady state/state of control.
  • Proven application of theoretical knowledge in the laboratory and proficient in a wide range of organic synthesis and characterization techniques. Broad knowledge of reagents and solvents, including application in the laboratory to the safe design and execution of batch and continuous reactions, work-ups and isolations.
  • The ability to employ analytical tools, computational and statistical methodology, and automated laboratory technologies to enhance process development efficiency, including awareness of process analytical technologies.
  • Ability to apply learnings to new situations and opportunities, demonstrating sound judgement in decision making. Rational, innovative and creative approach to problem solving
  • Capable of planning the scientific direction of work packages or projects. Able to work collaboratively and effectively within high performing teams. May mentor and direct other colleagues providing technical guidance.
