We have a great opportunity for a Senior Systems and Infrastructure Engineer to join our team in Cambridge.

Our Engineering Team




We are a small team of 5 engineers working within a larger software and IT department of approximately 43 people, so we still have the feeling of working for a small company.


IT is a core part of GMSL's business. We work closely with our software teams on our SaaS and B2B messaging solutions as well as supporting the day-to-day networking and systems you'd expect to find in most organisations.


We use a wide range of technologies across both On-Prem and Cloud environments to develop solutions for the business. GMSL's clients tend to be large companies so you will find we have much more IT than a normal company our size.

Senior Systems and Infrastructure Engineer

Our IT Engineers are multi-skilled in areas such as networking, servers, database platforms and there is always opportunity to learn. Our work can vary in size from large engineering projects to providing responses to customer support cases escalated from the helpdesk. We also provide 24/7/365 out-of-hours cover on a 1-week-in-4 rota to ensure business continuity.


We know it's unrealistic to find someone who ticks all the boxes which is why we are looking for people with a drive to learn and a passion for the technology sector.

Responsibilities



Maintaining our network and core systems Designing, implementing and supporting new core systems and services Communicating progress and escalating issues through daily meetings Providing day-to-day support to our users and external customers Performing routine scheduled software maintenance Collaborating with other teams to develop new business solutions Evaluating third-party products against business needs Following security practices and standards Maintaining business continuity Testing our backup systems and disaster recovery capabilities Maintaining and creating documentation

Your Experience



We are looking for the following essential technical knowledge and experience:



10+ years' experience as an IT Systems and Network Engineer, or similar role Strong networking skills (e.g. TCP/IP, DNS, ports and protocols, routers, bridges, latency, packet loss, firewall rules, VPNs, knowledge of MTUs etc.) Windows Server systems administration (Active Directory, GPOs, RADIUS, CA management, RDS, PowerShell) Linux systems administration (Ubuntu, Exim, DoveCot, Samba, Apache2, OpenSSL, PAM, SELinux) Email (DMARC, SPF, SMTP, MX, IMAP) Willing to share on-call rota, one week in four, to resolve critical issues only, with renumeration provided

Ideally candidates will also have experience in one or more of these important aspects:




(In each case from analysis/characterisation of services to selection for a use case, setup, troubleshooting, administration, monitoring and maintenance)

Database administrator and architect for SQL Server and/or Oracle or similar Strong knowledge of Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Entra ID administration Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards Virtual machine hosts and storage clusters Azure, AWS, GCP knowledge

We are also looking for the following soft skills:

Leadership - Capable of leading projects, as required Teamwork - Able to collaborate on projects, as required Multi-tasking - Comfortable picking up existing projects and interpreting technical detail Communication - excellent communication skills both written and face-to-face, engaging with management and peers Adaptability - Flexible in dealing with multiple tasks, priorities and technical detail

Location Central Cambridge - Hybrid (min 2 days a week in office) Job type Permanent Hours Mon-Fri, 37.5 hours per week

All our teams spend at least one day a week in the office and this role requires a minimum of two days a week in our office, so you need to be based within easy travel to Cambridge.


Our Cambridge office is centrally located in the Hills Road, CB2 area, within walking distance of Cambridge train station and the city centre; we have bike and car parking available.
