The full-time starting salary is normally 35,331 per annum, with progression available in post to 39,002 per annum.

Are you a skilled and passionate fine woodworker and craftsperson? Do you have experience of sharing knowledge and skills whilst maintaining safe and creative workshop facilities? If so, Birmingham City University, Art, Design and Media Faculty have an exciting opportunity for you to join our technical team as a Senior Technician -Woodwork.



The role is focused on supporting students in the production of high-quality outcomes for a range of courses, such as Architecture, Interior architecture, Landscape architecture and Product and Furniture Design as well as managing the safe and efficient running of the woodwork facilities. There is a strong emphasis on skill delivery, so we are looking for someone with a broad range of woodworking skills and experience.



Whilst the role is centred on expertise in wood orientated processes, it is essential that the candidate can signpost or support students to use other materials and processes (plastics, metal, ceramics, etc) where appropriate.



As a Senior Technician, the successful candidate will be comfortable working within a team as well as on their own initiative. You will be expected to carry out all tasks associated with the running of a facility of this kind, this will involve.


Training students, through 1:1 instruction and group demonstrations. Maintaining equipment, and scheduling machine servicing. Ordering materials and recording material use and stock levels. Championing sustainable working methods and use of resources. Managing appointment and demonstration bookings Creating and reviewing health and safety documentation. Ensure that Health and Safety is maintained and put into practice at all times. Work cooperatively and collaboratively with technical colleagues supporting their development and skill building.

The candidate should be qualified to degree level in a relevant subject (or equivalent level combination of qualifications, skills and experience) and be able to demonstrate significant practical experience of woodwork at all scales and levels of production. Have strong communication skills with an ability to impart technical knowledge to individuals, groups of students, colleagues and external organisations. Have good IT skills including Microsoft Office programs, be CAD literate, familiar with Asset Management software and online communication tools.



It would be desirable if the candidate had CNC Router operation, Steam bending, Veneering, First Aid training, COSHH qualification and IOSH/NEBOSH qualification.
