The primary purpose of the role is to ensure the upkeep and general care of the Hospice and retail units, carrying out a range of valued added activities to include but not limited to general maintenance in and around sites and gardens, ensuring high levels of cleanliness at all times and supporting with general movement of medical equipment and furniture. This role requires the need to perform all duties with health and safety compliance as standard practice. Strict adherence of the charity's safety protocols and procedures across job sites is essential.
General
Upkeep and general care of the Hospice and retail units including:
General maintenance and minor repair work including: doors, windows, toilet seats and flushes, furniture, tap washers.
Painting and decorating
Checking hospice security daily and reporting any defects/damage
Receive and check goods and supplies
Ensure that a clear passage is maintained in all walkways especially fire escape routes
General collection and delivery of resources in the local vicinity as directed
Support with the planning and maintenance of the gardens and grounds with a team of volunteers
Participate in the 'On Call Rota' for security and maintenance
Maintenance
Noting, monitoring and reporting any defects to the Operations Manager
Clean guttering, soffits, bargeboards and external lights
Keep all hard surfaces free of moss and weeds
Make safe any hazards and ensure that the area is cordoned off
Keep paths and entrances free of ice, snow and lichen to ensure the safety of staff and visitors
Regularly check the condition and operation of general lighting, emergency lighting, self-closing fire doors, window/fasteners, extractors and yard gullies, taking corrective action where appropriate/able, or report for attention by external tradespeople.
Carry out general maintenance tasks, as instructed and assist with refurbishment work and light labouring duties, as and when required
Ensure that all lighting and heating are working effectively including monitoring and setting of heating controls and boilers
Awareness of stopcock locations, gas and electricity meters, reading meters as required
Ensure that the boiler house is kept tidy
Ensure all flammable material is stored safely and in accordance with H&S regulations
Replace and repair fluorescent tube starters and fluorescent tubes
Cleaning
Disinfect drains regularly
Ensure that bins and external rubbish is stored appropriately
Cleaning and tidying of the internal Hospice building and external glass.
Sweep car parks, pick up litter and be responsible for the removal of all debris from paths, grassed areas, flowerbeds and all entrances.
Empty internal communal rubbish bins daily and work with the Trust on recycling initiatives.
Ensure that all refuse is disposed of promptly and stored away from the main building
Routinely clean lampshades and light diffusers (strip lights) up to a height of eleven feet.
Deputise for housekeepers if required
Porterage
Movement of medical equipment and linen at Hospice
Move furniture and preparation of the Conference Room/Offices for functions
Drive the hospice-owned vehicle to carry out duties.

Infection Control and Prevention
All employees of the Butterfly Hospice are required to:
Maintain a clean and safe environment, minimise risks of infection, report infection control issues of concern to their line manager and attend mandatory infection prevention training.
Work in accordance with their local infection control procedures and in adherence to the Code of Practice for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infection as outlined in the 'Health and Social Care Act 2008'.
A satisfactory DBS check will need to be returned prior to commencement of employment.
