The Opportunity

We are looking for a proactive and engaging individual who is experienced in social value / social impact to join Arup\xe2\x80\x99s Northwest and Yorkshire Team, based in our Leeds office.

You will provide consultancy advice to clients in the built environment sector, working on a range of projects for commercial and public sector clients. You will assist with the delivery of major developments and infrastructure projects across the UK and will work in multi-disciplinary teams with a wide range of Arup specialist in fields such as engineers, planners, economists and sustainability consultants. You will have an ability to work collaboratively with other social value specialists across the UK in the development and delivery of social value services to clients, and be able to work with wider sustainability specialists to provide a holistic approach across social, environmental and economic sustainability. You will lead our social value delivery within our Leeds office, supporting leaders and project teams to embed social value into our day to day operations and our client work.

Key areas of work are; Delivering high-quality social value consultancy services for clients; Helping shape how social value outcomes are embedded within Arup\xe2\x80\x99s infrastructure and built environment projects; Leading our social value approach in West Yorkshire, building relationships with local stakeholders and cross-sector partners; Supporting bid and project teams, particularly those based in our Yorkshire offices to design and develop social value commitments to meet clients\xe2\x80\x99 requirements, and to ensure that these are realised, monitored and reported on our contracts; Developing internal materials, systems and processes to continually improve how social value is planned, delivered and monitored in Arup.

Current and recent projects include embedding social benefits in the business case for flood alleviation schemes with the Environment Agency, developing social impact strategies and frameworks for property clients, developing place-based social value plans for energy programmes, creating a national youth forum to enable youth engagement in the nuclear waste sector and advising on sustainable procurement approaches with infrastructure clients. Internally, the team has led the development of place-based Know Your City plans for our offices across the UK, ensuring that our social value delivery as a business better meets local needs, creating a sustainable impact. You will manage the delivery of the Leeds office Know Your City plan.

Is this role right for you?

We are seeking demonstrable experience of delivering social value projects and programmes in a client-facing environment, in particular you will have experience of:

  • Applying the principles of social value to projects at different scales
  • Working with a range of stakeholders at different levels in organisations
  • Developing and applying local needs and / or socio economic analyses to inform social value approaches
  • Producing social value action plans \xe2\x80\x93 partnering with local organisations and developing collaborative approaches
  • Using and adapting a wide range of social value impact measurement approaches, tools and metrics
We are interested in hearing from applicants who also have an interest or experience in aligning social value approaches to the development of business cases, economic and equality impact assessment, just transition and wider environmental / sustainability projects.

This position will be based in the Leeds office, leading our social value approach across West Yorkshire and building long-term local partnerships to best meet local need. The team leader is based in Manchester. However, they regularly visit their team members throughout the various offices.
