Our teams work as agile squads made up of colleagues and business partners. We build and run the applications that bill, invoice, and collect payments for all customers of our customer facing businesses.

Right now, most of our applications run on Oracle databases, using Java, PLSQL and SQL. As part of our transformation, we\'re building new services in Java and Python, making our applications suitable to run in the public cloud and leveraging the power of cloud data capabilities for data reporting, analytics and AI. We need you to come and help us make this a reality.

What you\'ll be doing

  • A skilled software engineer, driving automation and cloud readiness.
  • Reviewing data, solving complex problems, and creating data solutions
  • Inputting, understanding,and challenging engineering conclusions, and empowering your squad to be autonomous.
  • Collaborating with other engineering leaders to contribute to company-wide engineering best practices and standards.
  • Providing technical knowledge to consult on significant component(s) of a solution, as well as taking responsibility for the software deliverables.
  • Supporting and coaching a team of high performing software engineers and driving continuous improvement across your squad.
You should apply if:
  • You\'re a skilled software engineer, with up-to-date skills, and passionate about high quality, secure and performant software
  • You\'re proactive about learning and coaching others
  • You\'re proficient in agile ways of working
  • You\'re comfortable working in a fast-paced environment as part of a DevOps culture
  • You\'re proficient with AWS, SQL and one or more strongly typed languages (e.g. Java, Go, Python)
  • You\'ve experience with relational and NoSQL databases, and data technologies (e.g. Hadoop, Spark, Dataflow, BigQuery, Dataproc)
  • You\'re a good communicator, able to advise technical and non-technical stakeholders
Bonus points for (but not essential):
  • Experience working with Google Cloud data tools.
  • Hold one or more Google or other cloud platform certification
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code, Spring, Scala, and/orKafka
  • Experience leading a software engineering team
  • Experience working in or runninganSRE team

Why this job matters

The Software Engineering Specialist independently executes advanced activities to deliver the engineering strategy and roadmap that supports BT\'s commercial strategy through cross functional business partnering and the participation of a team that pursues innovation as well as engineering excellence.

What you\'ll be doing

1. Delivers the engineering strategy in ensuring the engineering organisation\'s ability to deliver high quality on time and on budget and implementing means of bringing measurability as well as predictability to the engineering organisation\'s capabilities
2. Executes complex technical decisions, technology choices and architecture for a wide range of high-performance products, capabilities, and platforms, effectively balancing short-term impact with long-term transformation
3. Resolves complex and strategic issues using advanced technical knowledge, across wider industry and/or specific sectors, and develops bespoke or leading edge, technically complex solutions (e.g., relating to new, un-tested technology and/or large-scale impact of products)
4. Executes and contributes to the development of the ambitious and compelling technical roadmap to meet the needs of the business, engineering team, and partner teams
5. Executes engineering and operational excellence initiatives, implementing metrics and process for regular assessment and improvement
6. Drives an engineering culture that fosters innovation and creativity while delivering high quality products with predictability and reliability
7. Writes, tests and reviews code, refining and rewriting as necessary independently and communicates to engineering professionals and colleagues involved in the project
8. Solves complex and escalated aspects of a project, performing coding, debugging, testing and troubleshooting when necessary
9. Plays a positive contributor role in the software engineering organisation, implementing the technical vision and the pursuit of innovations regarding new technologies, platforms and applications
10. Evaluates, implements and maintains high-quality tools and complex automation processes to support continuous delivery and developer productivity
11. Implements new architectures, standards, and methods for large-scale enterprise systems
12. Researches, designs and writes new software and performs deep dive data analysis, to identify issues and implement ways to improve working processes within the area of software engineering responsibility, such as avoiding and reducing technical debt
13. Mentors other software engineers, helping to improve the team\'s abilities by acting as a technical resource
14. Champions, continuously develops and shares with team knowledge on emerging trends and changes in software engineering
