Responsibilities

Provide legal advice and assistance on routine and complex housing management, landlord, and tenant matters, with support from senior team members as needed. Conduct efficient and effective litigation, including anti-social behavior injunctions, possession claims, committal applications, tenancy fraud claims, housing disrepair claims, and more, to protect the interests of Southern Housing and its partners. Assist in the provision of advice and conduct of other contentious matters, such as First Tier Tribunal cases, trespass claims, and breach of contract claims, with appropriate support. Instruct external solicitors for matters that cannot be handled internally. Develop the in-house legal provision to meet the needs of Southern Housing and its partners. Ensure cost-effective in-house legal work, including drafting pleadings and other legal documents, with support from senior team members as appropriate. Enhance communication between instructing officers and the legal team for effective and efficient operations. Develop and implement processes and procedures for efficient housing management and litigation services, including witness support for anti-social behavior cases. Comply with approved processes and procedures, maintaining data records as required by the Director of Legal Services. Stay updated with the legal and regulatory framework within which Housing Associations operate and share knowledge to promote a compliance-focused culture. Support junior legal team members and provide assistance to senior team members, building effective relationships with external contacts and partners. Maintain confidentiality, sensitivity, and professionalism in all activities, providing cover for other solicitors and the Legal Services Manager when needed.
Person Specification

Knowledge & Experience

Qualified solicitor or barrister. Experience in housing management litigation casework, preferably for housing associations or public sector bodies. Experience in drafting pleadings, conducting litigation, and advocacy. Thorough understanding of legal processes and Housing and Landlord & Tenant law. Experience in developing and implementing processes in housing management litigation or contentious property legal work. Experience in developing talent and supporting junior staff. Experience in conducting and advising on complex contentious litigation.

Skills

Excellent IT skills, especially in Microsoft Office suite and Outlook. Ability to present information in various forms to a high standard, with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent legal drafting skills.
