Speech and Language Support Assistant - Nurture Communication, Inspire Progress

The Role
Working closely with teachers and the school's Speech and Language Therapist, you'll support children aged 4-16 with a range of communication needs. Using tools such as PECS, Makaton, and visual timetables, you'll help pupils express themselves, build confidence, and engage more fully in school life.
This is a structured, nurturing environment where you'll provide one-to-one and small-group support, helping to create predictable routines that foster emotional safety and learning.
Your Key Responsibilities
Supporting speech, language, and communication development
Using alternative communication methods to help children express themselves
Promoting social interaction and emotional regulation
Following therapy-informed strategies tailored to individual needs
Supporting engagement and independence in the classroom
Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and families
Who This Role Would Suit
This position is ideal for:
Psychology, Education or Speech & Language graduates
Teaching assistants or support workers with SEND experience
Parents or carers with lived experience of communication needs
Anyone looking to gain experience before pursuing therapy, SEN teaching or child development pathways
You'll need:
A calm, patient and empathetic nature
An interest in speech and language support (full training provided)
Excellent communication and teamworking skills
A strong belief in inclusive practice and neurodiversity

Schedule
Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 3.30pm, term-time only

If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education, you will be paid on a weekly basis. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position but long term. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available.
