Job Description

Developing independent SLT skills in the assessment, treatment, and management of a caseload of adults with acquired communication and/or swallowing disorders. Caseloads may encompass a range of origins such as, stroke, respiratory medicine, cardio-thoracic medicine/surgery, senior health, general surgery, renal medicine, general medicine, neurology/neurosciences.
Main duties of the job
- With initial support working towards independent practice in assessing, treating and managing a caseload of adults with acquired communication and/or swallowing disorders that encompass a range of origins.
- Making differential diagnosis on the basis of evidence from assessment.
- Devising, implementing, and evaluating individualised treatment programmes
- Referral to instrumental assessments of swallowing
- Counselling and advising others regarding the management and care of

Job responsibilities
- The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, management and treatment of their own caseload of patient/clients with communication and/or swallowing impairment as a result of a range of conditions.
- The post holder will be expected to work with initial support moving to independent working.
- A significant proportion of these patients/clients will have English as an additional language (EAL).
- They will be expected to work as a member of a team providing an efficient and effective service, liaising with internal and external agencies.
- The post holder will also work within multi-disciplinary teams providing co-ordinated individualised management and/or treatment for patients/clients, involving families as necessary and providing appropriate recommendations and training to multi-disciplinary team members.
- The post holder will participate in continuing professional development and other activities to maintain evidence based best practice.
- The post holder will also assist with the work of student placements, guidance for speech therapy assistants and colleagues.
