About GMP

At Greater Manchester Police we're on a mission to make Greater Manchester a safer place to live, work and socialise. From our vibrant nightlife and our thriving workplaces to our rich communities and busy transport network, we are proud to be protectors of an area known for its variety and diversity - but we need your help.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) is a powerful force for good and our Communications and Engagement Branch works side by side with our hardworking and dedicated officers to support delivery of policing services and be a Force that does things differently.

Our Communication and Engagement branch has an enviable track record and has won numerous awards for crisis communication, digital developments, social media initiatives, campaigns and partnership working. We are expanding our team and you could join us!

We are responsible for engaging the public and the media on a wide variety of policing operations, from serious and violent crime to neighbourhood policing, producing news and appeals on all types of crime, working with the best documentary makers in the country and enhancing public confidence by developing engaging communications for diverse communities across our 10 districts.

We engage with the public and deliver two-way conversations, working to build public, staff and stakeholder trust and confidence by making sure people are informed and involved.

The Role

We are recruiting to the post of Staff Engagement and Internal Communications Officer to support the development of GMP's Staff Engagement and Internal Communications strategies and delivery of a comprehensive staff engagement and internal communication framework.

This role sits at the heart of how we connect with our officers and staff across the force. You'll be working in a unique policing environment where effective internal communication isn't just about sharing information - it's about maintaining morale, building resilience, and ensuring that every member of our workforce feels valued and heard, whether they're responding to emergencies at 3am or working in our specialist departments.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

Coordinating and delivering annual staff surveys, pulse surveys and focus groups, analysing results and providing insights that directly influence organisational decision-making Creating compelling content for our internal communication channels, from intranet articles and monthly publications to targeted email campaigns and leadership communications Supporting the implementation of our comprehensive Staff Engagement Framework, helping leaders across the organisation meet theirleadership commitments spanning strategic communication, employee voice, recognition, development and wellbeing Measuring and evaluating the effectiveness of engagement activities, preparing detailed reports for senior leaders on staff sentiment and recommendations for improvement Developing innovative approaches to reach our diverse workforce, recognising that police officers, PCSOs, civilian staff and volunteers all have different communication needs and working patterns Coordinating feedback mechanisms and ensuring that staff voices are heard and considered in strategic decision-making processes

The unique challenges of policing communication:

Working in police internal communications presents distinctive challenges. Our workforce operates across 24/7 shift patterns, from custody suites to motorway patrols, from specialist investigation units to neighbourhood teams. You'll need to craft communications that resonate equally with a detective working a complex fraud case and a response officer dealing with domestic incidents. The operational nature of policing means that communication must be immediate, accurate, and accessible to staff who may be accessing information on mobile devices between calls or during brief breaks in demanding shifts.

You'll also be working in an environment where external pressures - from media scrutiny to public expectations - directly impact staff morale and engagement. This requires a sophisticated understanding of how to maintain positive internal dialogue whilst acknowledging the real challenges our officers and staff face in their daily work.

What we're looking for:

The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience of delivering and evaluating staff engagement and internal communications activities, with an understanding of how to create content that cuts through the noise in a busy operational environment. You'll need to be adaptable, resilient, and able to work at pace whilst maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and sensitivity.

We're looking for someone who can balance the strategic with the practical - equally comfortable analysing engagement data to identify trends as they are writing a compelling article about a team's achievements or coordinating a sensitive communication during challenging times.

Join Our Journey

We're on an exciting journey to make GMP even greater. If you thrive on variety, enjoy the challenge of communicating effectively in a complex organisational environment, want to develop your career and apply your skills to be a force for good, please apply now to join us and you could be the difference!
