About the role

This

role is term time working 37 hours X 40 weeks



As a Student Mentor, you will be responsible for supporting our ambitions to provide students in our

specialist pre-technical provision

with high-quality support. Many

young people with barriers to education and learning

face significantly reduced life chances; they may be less likely to get and keep a job and more likely to experience ill health and poor mental health.

This role is fundamental in ensuring we work responsively to individual needs, enabling young people to develop choice and control in their daily lives and be ready for progression. You will support students to develop an understanding of themselves and the world around them, helping them build their

personal, social and employability skills

.

You will also support students to develop exemplary behaviour and attendance, improve outcomes for our learners, and maintain appropriate contact and communication with parents and carers.

Main Responsibilities:



To work in a fast pace environment, with the ability to think on your feet to react to situations as they arise. Know and be able to explain and implement the social model of disability in your work. Know and be able to implement a restorative practice approach to learners and behaviour development plans. Supporting transition activities for potential learners and working with key members of the Inclusion and Curriculum Teams to conduct initial assessments. Supporting the delivery of the academy's enrolment processes and key aspects of the induction programme, as directed by the Head of Student Experience. Developing the breadth of SHAPE (Staying Safe, Health & Well-being, Active Citizenship, Progression & Careers and Equality Matters) enrichment activities and student participation in them - through the lens of the social model of disability. Ensuring support materials and resources are accessible for the complex learners we are working with. Use symbol supported software to make adjustments as needed. Ensuring that all high and medium risk allocated academy students are contacted for an 'Early Insights' intervention following enrolment and prior to induction, with all interventions recorded on agreed college electronic systems. Providing bespoke wrap-around support, specifically pertaining to attendance, punctuality, engagement, mental health, wellbeing and safeguarding, for allocated students identified as high or medium risk following enrolment or later via the allocated Personal Tutor. Planning targeted enrichment activities to meet student need, utilising cross-college resources and ensuring learner voice is at the heart of developments - "nothing about me without me approach to our work" Completing 1:1 or 1: small group interventions with allocated high and medium risk academy students to improve student performance. Leading on Positive Behavioural Support for students by conducting and agreeing Positive Engagement Plans and Stage One contracts, monitoring them and de-escalating where appropriate. Acting as student advocate in any disciplinary action (stage two contract meetings and Disciplinary Hearings and Appeals). Planning re-integration activities and organising meetings for students on return from Time Out and arranging Restorative Justice meetings where appropriate. Undertaking behaviour walks, engaging with students and escorting them to class as appropriate Undertaking daily welfare contacts /calls to absent students or their next of kin as appropriate, recording interventions on agreed college electronic systems. Provision of ongoing mental health and wellbeing support for allocated academy students, referring appropriately externally and/or to the Listening Service. Providing support to any student in mental health crisis as required, seeking a member of the college management team to involve the emergency services where appropriate. Liaising with the College's safeguarding team, ensuring that any student safeguarding requirements are in place and communicated appropriately to relevant staff. Facilitating a 'student first culture' by listening and responding effectively to students, feeding back to academy leaders as appropriate. Ensuring robust and appropriate parent / carer liaison and communication for all allocated academy students, including supporting open events and parent / carer consultation meetings and evenings.

As the successful candidate, you will be offered a salary of between 31,885 - 35,849 per annum pro rata'd for hours worked based upon a combination of the skills, knowledgeand experience that you can bring to the role
