Job Summary - Senior Support Worker (Children's Residential Home - Complex Needs)
We are looking for an experienced and compassionate
Senior Support Worker
to join our dedicated team in a children's residential home supporting young people with
complex needs
, including emotional and behavioural difficulties, trauma, and additional learning or developmental challenges. This is a vital leadership role, combining hands-on care with shift leadership, mentoring, and coordination of care. You will help ensure the home provides a safe, nurturing, and stable environment where children can thrive and begin to heal.
Key Responsibilities
Provide consistent, high-quality care and emotional support to children and young people with complex needs, in line with individual care and behaviour management plans.
Support young people with daily routines, including personal care, meals, education, therapeutic activities, and bedtime routines.
Promote and model positive behaviour, resilience, emotional regulation, and social skills through trauma-informed and child-centred approaches.
Lead shifts and supervise staff, ensuring clear task delegation, safe practice, effective handovers, and consistent routines.
Respond to crisis situations calmly and professionally using recognised de-escalation and behaviour support strategies.
Maintain accurate and timely records, including incident reports, safeguarding concerns, key worker notes, and progress logs.
Participate in key working responsibilities, helping to build trusting, secure relationships with children in your care.
Collaborate with multi-agency teams including social workers, education professionals, therapists, and health practitioners.
Support the creation of a homely, safe, and engaging environment that promotes independence and confidence.
Provide coaching, support, and supervision to junior staff, supporting their growth and ensuring adherence to care standards.
Assist in the development and review of risk assessments, care plans, and safeguarding protocols.
Experience and Qualifications
Minimum of
NVQ Level 3 in Residential Childcare
(or Children & Young People's Workforce). Level 4 or willingness to work towards it is highly desirable.
Significant experience supporting children and young people with
emotional, behavioural, or complex needs
in a residential care setting.
Experience in a senior, shift leader, or supervisory position is preferred.
Solid understanding of safeguarding, trauma-informed care, therapeutic approaches, and positive behaviour support.
Training in behaviour management strategies (e.g., Team Teach, PRICE, MAPA) is advantageous.
First Aid certification and knowledge of health and safety protocols in a care setting are desirable.
A full UK driving licence is preferred to support transporting children to school, appointments, and activities.
