An exciting opportunity is available for the role of Support Worker / Buddy, caring for a young lady with learning disabilities, after school and in the school holidays. The ideal candidate will be energetic, have a good sense of humour, and a professional and responsible work ethic. The candidate must have an interest in assisting the client to develop their social skills and life skills, whilst promoting their independence, within the home and community. It is essential that the candidate is physically active and willing to participate in activities that the client enjoys, possesses excellent communication and listening skills, and can ensure the client's safety at all times.

The Client



The client is a fun and chatty 19 year old female, who is registered as severely sight impaired, and has learning disabilities and Epilepsy. She is dependent on an adult to promote her safety and assist with the activities of daily living. Social and recreational pursuits are an essential element of the client's care, as she enjoys communicating, building new friendships, and learning new life skills.

The client lives with her family and dogs in Shillington, Hitchin. She loves singing, outdoor activities, creating stories and talking about pop culture.

The Role



The candidate will be required to provide one-to-one care to the client, within the family home and out in the community. The role requires a commitment to building an appropriate friendship and rapport with the client, providing a high standard of therapeutic support in line with relevant guidelines, and working respectfully and professionally with the client and their family.

The candidate must have a clean driving licence.



Tasks will include collecting the client from college, accessing activities in the community, assisting with personal care, and adhering to guidance and care plans implemented by professionals.

The role also requires creative thinking and initiative, to engage the client in activities that will enhance their experience and promote expression and independence. The ability to remain calm, and supportive, with excellent listening skills is paramount.

Complete training, support and guidance will be provided by the case manager who will oversee the role.

Essentials



Must have experience working with young people with additional health and/or learning needs. Must be reliable, punctual, professional and friendly Must be safety and risk aware, with an understanding of the responsibility associated with caring for a vulnerable young person Must have excellent communication skills, caring, good initiative and problem solving skills Ability to work effectively individually and as part of a small team Must be fluent in English - both written and verbal Must be comfortable being around the family dogs Must have a clean driving licence Must have a satisfactory DBS check and eligibility to work in the UK

Desirables



Experience working with young people with learning disabilities Experience in working with people with Epilepsy, and with those who are sight impaired Flexibility to occasionally adjust or increase hours in accordance with the client and family's needs
