Greenwash-y way, but in the real sense: making small, meaningful changes behind the scenes that help us do the things the right way, for the right reasons.
ROLE:
We're proud of the progress we've made so far, but we're not done yet. We're still at the beginning of our journey. Our sustainability lead is heading off on maternity, and we're looking for someone to keep our sustainability journey moving whilst she's away.
You'll keep our ESG goals on track, keep projects ticking along and ideas flowing across the business. It's about progress, not perfection and leading the agenda as part of a team that truly cares about doing the right thing.
FOCUS AREAS:
Keep ESG goals on track. Monitor and report on key sustainability metrics (carbon, packaging, energy use, waste), ensuring we stay aligned with company objectives.
Lead ongoing sustainability projects, from packaging innovation and supplier engagement to waste reduction and community initiatives.
Maintain and support any assessment or certification progress, keeping documentation up to date, tracking improvements, and contributing to future recertification efforts.
Collaborate cross-functionally, working closely with production, operations, marketing, and leadership to embed sustainable thinking into everything we do.
Engage stakeholders inside and out. Communicate sustainability progress and priorities with both internal teams and external partners, helping to build shared understanding and momentum.
Champion sustainability internally, bringing the team along on the journey through updates, workshops, and storytelling.
Stay curious and forward-thinking. Keep an eye on new trends, materials, and opportunities to help NORTHERN BLC continue leading responsibly.
This is a part-time, 12-month maternity cover role starting January/February 2026 (approx. 3-4 days a week, Leeds-based. Flexible hours).
IDEAL CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:
// Experience in sustainability or ESG project management.
// Strong understanding of environmental impact measurement and reporting, including carbon footprinting, waste reduction, and sustainable sourcing.
// Confident communicator and collaborator -- able to engage and influence both internal teams and external partners (suppliers, industry networks, consultants, etc.).
// Hands-on and proactive, comfortable balancing strategic work with rolling up your sleeves to get things done.
// Analytical and organised, with the ability to track progress, interpret data, and turn insights into meaningful actions.
// Values-driven mindset - someone who genuinely believes in making business a force for good, not just ticking boxes.
// Good presentation, planning & communication skills

LOCATION:
Office based at our HQ in Leeds. Hybrid working available and we are happy to discuss flexible working hours.
PACKAGE:
