Main duties and responsibilities
General
The care and welfare of specific children, under the designation of the Headteacher and Teacher in charge of the class.
The promotion of social skills, by structuring interaction between peers as and when necessary.
The establishment of firm codes of acceptable behaviour, encouraging independence and
responsibility.
Contributing to a standard of care where the children feel secure. Also ensuring the children are physically safe by making sure that activities are supervised.
Providing a welcoming and caring response to children.
To work with specific groups in or out of class as directed by the class teacher and / or SENCo. The activities can include: reading; writing; practical, creative and physical activities; ICT activities; specific intervention programmes from the SEN Plan.
The participation in preparation of resources (this includes games, activities and worksheets), organisation, and record keeping of activities and individual children's progress, under the direction of the teacher in charge. To give verbal feedback to the class teacher or SENCo about the children and the activities undertaken.
To monitor children's progress, identifying particular needs, difficulties and problems and feedback to the class teacher and/or SENCO. To be involved in the target setting process for specific children.
To assist with the supervision of children within class settings, at playtimes, on outings and educational visits and those not participating in an activity.
To carry out photocopying of resources, mounting of work, preparation of games and resources for the children, to stick work in children's books and other tasks related to classroom practice and to the workforce reform list of 24 tasks as directed by the class teacher.
To attend courses and staff meetings as required by the Headteacher
The post holder is responsible as a teaching assistant for a named child
The post holder is required to carry out the following specific duties :-
To support a specific child with special educational needs
To run and monitor interventions as directed by the class teacher/SENCO
To foster concentration and focus within lessons for the named child
To keep records of the child's progress and share with teachers and SENCO, as relevant.
To participate in meetings and reviews, as relevant for the child
To work as an active member of the team, relate positively to the children and assist in creating a climate where parents/carers, students and co-operating agencies feel welcome, secure and able to contribute to the life of the school.
To contribute to the educational and social development of children through the delivery of programmes of activity appropriate to their individual / differing needs
To work with groups or individual children, as appropriate; to be aware of the needs of each child and of the need to organise the learning environment. To work with individual children with specific programmes identified to meet Special Educational Needs
To contribute to discussion and monitoring of individual children's progress, development and achievements, sharing observations and keeping agreed records, ensuring that confidentiality is maintained at all times. To liaise with relevant professionals/other agencies - as required - and in this regard. To liaise with SENCO and class teacher.
To be fully involved with, and be able to support individual pupils with specific learning programmes and to observe children as appropriate ensuring sensitive intervention takes place where necessary.
Again, to contribute to the maintenance of appropriate records.
To care for the safety of children by following appropriate health and safety policies and procedures, and to be vigilant in identifying potential difficulties, contributing to risk assessments where appropriate
To supervise and maintain purposeful working areas and prepare the classrooms and associated areas before and after each session ensuring that equipment used is clean, safe, in good repair and appropriately stored.
To guide the development of children's social behaviour and attitudes and to cater for the physical needs of the children as required.
To ensure that, where and when relevant, children in reception adhere to toilet training programmes and encourage development - as required
To participate with support to parents and children during the transition from home to school, assessing stages of development - as required.
Other Associated Tasks
You are required to carry out such particular duties as the Headteacher, in conjunction with the SENCo may reasonably direct from time to time.

Note:
This job description is not exhaustive and will be subject to periodic review. It may be amended to meet the changing needs of the school. The post-holder will be expected to participate in this process and the school would aim to reach agreement on any changes.
Person specification - Teaching Assistant
Experience
Recent experience working with primary school age children
Evidence of running successful interventions with a variety of children with differing needs
Recent CPD in SEN
Enjoy working with children
Experience or knowledge of working with children who have social, emotional or mental health difficulties as well as learning difficulties
Willingness and/or experience of working with parents
Qualified First Aider
Confident ICT user
Knowledge and skills
A good and secure knowledge and understanding of Special Educational Needs programmes, interventions and strategies.
Willingness to undertake appropriate training including medical training if necessary
