Job Description


Pan Macmillan are looking for a Text Design Apprentice to join their team in the central London offices! This is a fantastic opportunity to start your career within the publishing industry with one of the largest publishing houses in the UK, where you will work with the Pan Macmillan team across a variety of different areas alongside completing the Level 3 Publishing Assistant Apprenticeship. Key tasks would potentially include the following:

  • Assist Text Design Manager
  • Learn principles of text design
  • Understand and implement Pan Mac House Style
  • Check margin guides, cast-offs and proofs match the text design spec, and correct as needed
  • Supply miscellaneous designs for titles in production, including prelims pages, end ads, endmatter material and tip-in pages
  • Design plate sections
  • Checking images for publications are appropriate quality
  • Retouching work on images
  • Liaise with freelancers regarding ongoing text design projects
  • Ensure archiving of all files is accurate and up to date, and Biblio schedules are updated
Key relationships:
  • Entire Production team
  • Key internal departments include editorial, art and managing editorial
Skills
  • Interest in typography, with a keen attention to detail
  • Self-directed work style with good multitasking skills
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite - InDesign, Photoshop
  • Basic knowledge of Google for Work and Microsoft Word
  • Problem-solving approach
  • Organising & planning workload
  • Written and oral communication skills
  • A basic understanding of reprographics and print processes would be useful
  • Interest in design and a design sensibility, preferably focused on typography
  • Ability to prioritise tasks
  • Experience in time management
Entry Requirements
  • You\xe2\x80\x99ll need to attend an online interview with our Talent team and pass initial assessments in Maths and English once you have completed your registration.
  • You will need to be within a commutable distance to the office location listed.
This is a full time, fixed-term role, and will be based in our offices in Farringdon, London, with some flexibility to work from home each week. All applicants must be able to demonstrate the right to live and work in the UK in order to be considered for this role.
Duration: 15 Months

Annual Salary: \xc2\xa324,000

More about the apprenticeship programme As a Publishing Assistant Apprentice, you\xe2\x80\x99ll gain exposure to all key parts of the publishing process starting from the initial conception of a book, all the way through to production, sales, marketing, and publicity processes. Throughout your apprenticeship, you\'ll be invited to monthly 3-hour live sessions hosted online in addition to working on your course content via our online learning platform. To meet the off-the-job requirements for your apprenticeship, you\'ll also spend a minimum of 6 hours a week within the workplace developing your publishing knowledge, skills, and behaviours listed within your bespoke LDN Training Plan.
