The Theatres Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operational management and coordination of surgical theatre activity. This includes managing elective and emergency surgical lists, ensuring appropriate staffing, equipment, and resources are in place to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality perioperative care. The role involves close liaison with multidisciplinary teams including surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, operating department practitioners (ODPs), and administrative staff.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Management
Coordinate theatre schedules, managing elective, trauma, and emergency procedures across allocated theatre suites.
Ensure efficient utilisation of theatre lists .
Act as the main point of contact for daily theatre activity, ensuring appropriate prioritisation and escalation of issues.
Clinical Leadership
Support and mentor theatre staff, promoting clinical excellence and adherence to infection control, safeguarding, and patient safety protocols.
Contribute to the development and implementation of local theatre policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and risk assessments.
Communication & Collaboration
Liaise effectively with consultants, anaesthetists, scheduling teams, and recovery/post-operative care units to ensure seamless patient care pathways.
Facilitate team briefings, debriefs, and participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions.
Resource Management
Monitor stock levels, equipment functionality, and availability of surgical instruments, escalating procurement issues as required.
Ensure appropriate staffing levels across theatre suites, including temporary staff requests and rota adjustments.
Governance & Audit
Support clinical governance activities including incident reporting (Jotform), root cause analysis (RCA), and quality improvement initiatives.
Participate in regular audits (e.g. WHO Surgical Safety Checklist compliance, infection prevention, theatre efficiency).
Essential Criteria
Registered Nurse (NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC) with minimum 3 years post-registration experience.
Proven experience in a senior role within perioperative care.
Sound knowledge of UK theatre standards, governance, and infection control protocols.
Excellent communication, organisation, and leadership skills.
Desirable Criteria
Leadership or management qualification.
Experience using theatre scheduling software.
Previous experience coordinating multiple theatre suites or leading service improvement projects.
