Job Description

This job posting is for a Junior Clinical Fellow in Psychiatry at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust in Croydon.



The post seeks three successful candidates who will be assigned to one of two rotations that consist of an inpatient post and a community post. Candidates will rotate between the two posts, working six months in each over a year.

Position :

Fixed-term, full-time (9am-5pm, Monday to Friday) with optional on-call rota.

Rotations :

One year split between an inpatient post and a community post (six months each).

Inpatient Role :

Work on acute psychiatric wards (Gresham 1 and Gresham 2) at Bethlem Royal Hospital

Community Role :

Work with Croydon Central Locality and Croydon Central A and L teams,

Team Composition :

Multidisciplinary teams including doctors, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, and psychologists.

Opportunities :

Develop skills in assessment, care, and treatment of vulnerable patients, dynamic risk assessment, and working with acutely disturbed patients.

Professional Development :

Two sessions for supporting professional activities per week, equivalent to 1 day, where successful candidates can pursue an interest in psychiatry, be it research, teaching, specialist clinical experiences, psychotherapy experience or other projects.



Clinical responsibilities



Review and Management of inpatients/team caseload and day-to-day workload of the service Attending ward rounds/team meetings/CPA Meetings Carrying out risk assessments and formulating appropriate risk management plans Formulating care plans Physical health monitoring of patients - including carrying out physical examination and investigations as appropriate Liaising with GP's and various other professionals/ teams within and outside SLAM including with Social services, DVLA and the Voluntary sector. Attending external patient meetings as appropriate Making safeguarding referrals Record keeping - including preparing reports/letters, discharge notifications/summaries and ensuring that all the relevant information gathered by you following patient contact is recorded clearly in the trust's electronic notes (EPJS) and elsewhere as appropriate.

8 Programmed Activities per week will be devoted to Direct Clinical Care and 2 SPAs to Supporting Professional Activity.



The two successful candidates will rotate between the two posts at six months with a years total duration.

Gresham 1 and Gresham 2 are a 21 bedded female and 22 bedded male ward respectively based at the Bethlem Royal Hospital, where acute inpatient care of Croydon residents is provided. They operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.



Both wards have dedicated doctors' offices and shared clinic rooms. There is also dedicated admin support for the team. The Bethelm Hospital is one of the oldest psychiatric hospitals in the world. Its current iteration is its third location in its history. The Bethlem Hospital benefits from expansive grounds, woodland areas, a hospital garden, and a renowned museum.



Both Central Community teams provide a service Monday to Friday between the hours of 9 am -5 pm (excluding bank holidays). Monthly reflective practice sessions are open to all staff members. The team also has an excellent training record for doctors in postgraduate training and student nurses. The teams have a strong management structure, including a Clinical Service Lead and Community Matron who supports quality and safety. Both teams operate from Jeanette Wallace House (JWH) in central Croydon. JWH is a modern, spacious and light 8-floor purpose-built office suite with a mix of private and open-plan spaces. The building has clinical rooms and assessment rooms on the ground floor which can be booked by all staff members. Also in JWH are other Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) in Croydon as well as services like Croydon Talking Therapies, the Croydon AMHP service and Medical HR.
