About this opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Trainee Building Control Surveyor to join Westmorland and Furness Council's Building Control Service, a vital team ensuring that new developments across the area are safe, sustainable, and fully compliant with the Building Regulations and the Building Safety Act.

Our Building Control Service plays a key role in safeguarding the built environment, ensuring buildings are constructed to the highest safety and quality standards, while also managing the Council's responsibilities for dangerous structures and enforcement.

As a Trainee Building Control Surveyor, you'll support the day-to-day work of the service while following a structured development programme designed to help you build the knowledge, skills, and qualifications needed to become a fully qualified Building Control professional.

Working closely with experienced surveyors, you'll assist with plan assessments, site inspections, and customer enquiries, gaining hands-on experience across residential, commercial, and industrial projects. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to combine professional development with meaningful, real-world impact on local communities.

Key priorities include:
Assisting in the assessment of building regulation applications under supervision. Supporting site inspections to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. Helping with the management of dangerous structures and enforcement procedures. Building positive relationships with developers, architects, and homeowners. Participating in a structured training and development programme leading to professional accreditation. Maintaining accurate digital records and supporting process improvements within the service.

This is an excellent opportunity to begin or advance your career in Building Control, gaining professional qualifications and on-the-job experience within a supportive and forward-thinking local authority team.

Who we are looking for...

We're looking for an ambitious and committed individual with a genuine interest in construction, building standards, and public safety. You'll be eager to learn, enjoy problem-solving, and have the drive to develop into a qualified Building Control professional.

You will have a degree or equivalent qualification (or be working towards one) in Building Surveying, Construction, Architectural Technology, or a related field, or relevant professional experience in the construction or regulatory environment.

You will also bring:
A strong interest in the built environment and regulatory compliance. Good organisational and time management skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. A positive, professional attitude and a willingness to learn from experienced colleagues. Basic IT skills, including use of Microsoft Office and digital case management systems. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

You'll receive full support, mentoring, and training to gain the technical and professional qualifications needed to progress to a Building Control Surveyor role.

If you're looking for a career that makes a difference, ensuring buildings are safe, sustainable, and built to last -- we'd love to hear from you.
