Job Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and safety-focused
Lead Climber - Tree Surgeon
to join our arboricultural team. In this hands-on leadership role, you'll be responsible for executing and overseeing all climbing and aerial tree work operations, including pruning, felling, dismantling, and aerial rescue. You'll work closely with ground staff and management to ensure all jobs are completed efficiently, professionally, and safely.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform all aspects of aerial tree work, including crown reductions, deadwood removal, dismantling, and felling.
Lead the climbing operations on-site and act as a point of authority on safe climbing and rigging practices.
Supervise ground crew and support their development and understanding of arboricultural techniques.
Carry out aerial rescues as needed, ensuring safety protocols are strictly followed.
Maintain climbing and rigging equipment, and report defects or issues.
Liaise with clients or team leaders to understand job specifications and ensure work is carried out to the required standards.
Ensure compliance with all health & safety regulations (PUWER, LOLER, etc.).
Conduct site risk assessments and contribute to method statements where necessary.
Train and mentor junior climbers and ground workers.
Represent the company in a professional and courteous manner.
Requirements:
Essential:
Minimum Level 2 or 3 in Arboriculture or equivalent (e.g., NPTC, City & Guilds)
NPTC Units:
CS30 & CS31 (Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross Cutting, Felling & Processing Trees)
CS38 (Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue)
CS39 (Use of Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness)
CS41 (Rigging Techniques) preferred
Minimum 3-5 years of professional climbing experience
Strong knowledge of tree species, tree health, and pruning standards (BS 3998)
Full UK driving licence (with towing B+E preferred)
First Aid at Work + Forestry (FAW+F)
Excellent communication and leadership skills
Desirable:
MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform) licence
LOLER Inspector qualification
Experience with large tree dismantles and crane-assisted removals
Traffic management or Chapter 8 certification
