Job Description

The Role



As a VAT Manager, you lead the preparation and review of VAT returns, ensuring compliance with UK VAT regulations. You will manage client portfolios, provide strategic advice on complex VAT issues, and oversee a team. Your role ensures accurate reporting, effective tax planning, and helps clients manage their VAT obligations efficiently.

Is able to respond to client queries relating to role with minimal input from others Demonstrates a clear understanding of clients' business, objectives, challenges and risks sufficient to brief more junior colleagues on assignment and direct work accordingly Demonstrates a broad understanding of client/customer market and environment and understands the importance of driving new business Manage flexible working of self and assistants based around client needs and business deadlines Reviews WIP on a monthly basis to ensure that fees are raised for any work that is completed or at a billable stage and that any doubtful time that may not be recovered is adequately provided, by updating CCH with the required provision Gain experience of winning new work through input into the preparation of proposals, fee quotes and attending client tenders.

Technical Skills

Preparation of:





(i) applications for single VAT registrations;



(ii) VAT group registrations;



(iii) VAT group changes;



(iv) applications to deregister;



(v) notifications of options to tax ("OTT")


Able to oversee the preparation of both standard and complex applications with minimal supervision and no adjustment required.

VAT Reviews/Healthchecks/Due Diligence




Be the main point of contact for clients and/or colleagues leading the project Manage timescales for delivery including, senior sign off time Able to produce client deliverable, with minimal adjustment required.

Tax advisory work and technical research




Able to build good relationship with the client for any future opportunities and become direct point of contact for VAT

Training and coaching (including internal VAT training for ABAS)




Able to confidently present on firm wide webinars, at client events etc. and knowledgably deal with questions arising.

Liaising with HMRC




Able to build a relationship with the HMRC officer and progress matters in a practical and pragmatic manner.

Winning work (existing clients and new clients)




Able to recognise and communicate fee winning opportunities arising from legislative/case-law changes Generates leads with existing clients and demonstrates ability to secure new work.


Qualifications



Holds a accountancy and/or tax qualification or qualified by experience (e.g. ATT/CTA/ACA/ACCA/CA).





Essential Experience



It is expected that the above core and technical skills will have been developed through study alongside work experience in an accountancy practice.
