Job Description
Do you want to give something back to your local community? Could you help improve the life of a lonely older person. Volunteers are urgently need to help and support isolated older people in Blaenau Gwent.
Life can be difficult for some older people. Some don't see people from day to day, or have family around them. They can find it hard to get out and meet people. and this has only got worse since the Covid-19 pandemic. You could have a positive impact on their lives and their mental health.
It could be just spending an hour chatting and sharing a hot drink with someone, or you could accompany them to a group activity in the area. A Volunteer Befriender can really make a difference in someone's life.
By volunteering as a Befriender you will be helping others while getting enjoyment out of it yourself. Your volunteering can fit around your other commitments and you only need to be able to give 1-2 hours a week.
All volunteers will have to undergo a DBS check and supply 2 character references.
Please note this is an unpaid volunteer role.
Summary
As an Older Person's Befriending Volunteer, you will provide essential companionship and support to older adults, enhancing their quality of life. This role requires strong communication skills to foster meaningful connections and a compassionate approach, including possibly for some experiencing some dementia. You will report to the Volunteer Coordinator and collaborate with other volunteers to ensure a positive experience for the individuals you assist.
Responsibilities
Engage in regular conversations with older individuals to provide companionship and emotional support. Assist in planning and participating in activities that promote social interaction and mental stimulation. Demonstrate effective communication skills to understand and respond to the needs of those with dementia. Maintain records of interactions and report any concerns to the coordinating team. Foster a positive and supportive environment to enhance the well-being of older persons.
