Purpose of the Role:

To support the Cancer Community Programme Manager to scope, analyse and fully understand the North Shields fishing community in accessing cancer healthcare services and develop an education and awareness programme. This will include addressing barriers around support to aid screening uptake, presentation at primary care to aid earlier diagnosis, supportive care through cancer pathways for ongoing physical and emotional support to improve outcomes for patients with cancer and those having completed treatment.



Duration:To end of March 2027

Hours: 37 hours per week (some weekend and out of hours working may be required). The Fishermen's Mission operates hybrid working practices, with a level of flexibility to ensure service needs are met, and as agreed with line manager.

With oversight from the Cancer Community Programme Manager, the Cancer Community Engagement Officer will oversee the day-to-day tasks of engaging with fishermen, their families, and communities to raise the profile and awareness of early cancer screening, testing and treatment. The Cancer Community Engagement Officer will work in partnership with all identified stakeholders to raise the profile of the Cancer Community Programme.

Main Responsibilities/duties:



1. To work closely with the Fishermen Mission Port Staff, fishermen, Cancer Community Programme Manager, Cancer Community Volunteer Lead and Cancer Volunteer Champions to develop a full understanding of the fishing community.

2. Work in collaboration with stakeholder organisations: fishing associations, Macmillan Cancer Support, Primary & Secondary Care, Public Health, North Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Voluntary Community & Social Enterprises (VCSE) and individuals as deemed appropriate.

3. Developing an outreach strategy to engage with the fishing community, active and retired fishermen, widows and families, to build and strengthen relationships that lead to engagement with the Cancer Community Programme. Nurturing relationships with the fishing community through consistent visibility on the quayside and in local communities, while delivering interactive activities to enhance deeper engagement.

4. Working with clinical and community partners and the Cancer Community Programme Manager, to eradicate health inequities faced by the fishing community. Identifying and understanding barriers and work with health services to introduce system change to provide the fishing community with access to personalised care.

5. To advocate between the fishing community and health and social care providers when individuals and/or communities are faced with barriers to cancer care, whilst also raising the profile of early cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment.

6. Encouraging the fishing community, active and retired, including widows and families to attend cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment appointments. Supporting with the removal of barriers, if possible. Collaborating with diverse populations to address health inequalities in cancer information by developing and implementing tools that enhance communication. Working with diverse groups to tackle health disparities by developing and implementing resource tools that enhance communication.

7. Work on an outreach basis, across community venues, to develop and implement community focus groups, to gather understanding/feedback of the different attitudes and barriers towards cancer awareness and healthcare provision. Working with the Cancer Community Programme Manager in addressing barriers to enable fishermen and their families to receive access to personalised care.

8. Working with the Cancer Community Volunteer Lead, Cancer Volunteer Champions, and community resources to design, develop, implement and co-deliver community cancer groupwork, C Aware community activities, events, and campaigns. Identifying health and VCSE partners to deliver themed place-based cancer awareness sessions to the fishing community.

9. Breaking down barriers to cancer awareness and enhancing access to health and VCSE services by creating, developing, and implementing digital community engagement through platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and audio podcasts. This includes uploading promotional content, conducting audio interviews, and handling recording and editing.

10. Promote the Cancer Community Programme by developing and creating promotional materials, implementing innovative resources to raise cancer awareness within the fishing community. Working alongside stakeholders on cancer awareness and cancer campaigns, designing tailored promotional material.

11. As part of the team, provide fishermen and fishing communities with cancer specific advice and information, thus removing stigma, promoting a positive mindset, and normalising cancer conversations. Signposting individuals and communities to early cancer screening provision and/or community cancer support services.

12. To obtain regular stakeholder feedback/evaluation and case studies. Encouraging service user involvement and participation in planning, delivery, and evaluation of the project. Providing the Cancer Community Programme Manager with quantitative and qualitative data.

13. Supporting the development of the Cancer Community Programme via presentations at stakeholder events/forums, networking, and promotion.

14. To undertake appropriate training to support ongoing professional development.

15. Work flexibly as may be required by the needs of the service, which will include some national travel to attend the Fishermen's Mission annual events/conferences.

Person Specification:



Experience of working on community projects, preferably, but not essentially, in a charity (D) Willingness to work in accordance with the policies and procedures of The Fishermen's Mission, agreed guidelines and codes of conduct (E). The Fishermen's Mission is an ecumenical Christian organisation, the Community Engagement Officer should be comfortable in working in this environment. (E) Appreciation of the importance of confidentiality and anti-discriminatory practice and equality and diversity; safe practice and health and safety procedures; and their application in practice (E).

Terms and Conditions



Based: Office based with regular travel around North Shields and frequent visits to North Shields Harbour. Access to regular use of a car will be essential. Mileage is reimbursed at the appropriate rate.

Annual Salary: 27,030.00 per annum

Probationary period: 6 months.

Group personal pension plan: available on satisfactory completion of 3 months service.

Life Assurance: up to four times annual salary.

Critical Illness cover: paying 75% of salary if unable to work for longer than 6 months due

to one of the covered conditions.

Holiday: 25 days annual leave plus public holidays
