Job summary

Highland and Islands Conservancy has a team of 26 staff based at the Conservancy office in Dingwall. The Conservancy covers 41% of Scotland's land area and includes the Highland, Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland local authorities and leads on the Cairngorms National Park. There is 418,000 hectares of woodland in the Conservancy.

The Conservancy has a large case workload with many sensitive cases, administering 2-2500 ha of Forestry Grant Scheme (FGS) woodland creation applications each year. Timber production is still rising with many private woodlands coming into production for the first time. There are 248 approved private forest plans covering 152,000ha of forest. There are 2 Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) Regions within the Conservancy. There is considerable potential to increase woodland creation.

The Conservancy contains the largest areas of peatland in the UK, including the flow country and many designated sites, making much of our casework sensitive and close working with NatureScot essential. Much of Scotland's native woodland lies within the Conservancy and improving the management and condition of these is a priority for the team. The Conservancy also contains most of the Crofting Counties and is helping to unlock the woodland potential on croft land and the many community managed woodlands across the Conservancy. The Conservancy also works closely with the UHI Scottish School of Forestry.
