To plan, prepare, and cook nutritious, balanced, and appealing meals for residents in line with individual dietary needs and preferences. The Chef plays a key role in supporting residents' health and wellbeing by ensuring food is safe, high-quality, and enjoyable.
Main Duties and Responsibilities, Meal Preparation and Cooking
Prepare and cook daily meals, snacks, and drinks for up to 16 residents.
Provide meals that meet individual dietary requirements, including soft diets, diabetic diets, and allergy-friendly options.
Follow menu plans that reflect residents' choices, cultural needs, and nutritional guidelines.
Ensure all meals are served on time and at the correct temperature.
Food Safety and Hygiene
Maintain the highest standards of food hygiene and cleanliness at all times.
Follow the home's Food Safety Policy and comply with Environmental Health and CQC standards.
Record fridge, freezer, and food temperatures daily.
Ensure proper storage, labelling, and rotation of food stock (FIFO system).
Kitchen Management
Order and manage food supplies within the agreed budget.
Reduce waste by careful portion control and stock management.
Keep kitchen equipment and utensils clean, safe, and well maintained.
Report any faults or maintenance issues promptly.
Teamwork and Communication
Work closely with care staff to understand residents' dietary needs and preferences.
Communicate with management regarding menu changes, special events, or supply needs.
Support kitchen assistants (if applicable) and promote a positive team environment.
Qualifications and Experience
NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in Food Preparation / Professional Cookery.
Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate (essential).
Experience working in a care home, hospital, or catering environment (desirable).
Good understanding of dietary needs for older adults.
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
