Job Description

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Chef to join our catering team within the nursing home. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in food preparation and hygiene standards, with a genuine passion for providing nutritious, well-balanced meals tailored to the needs of older adults. In this role, you will be responsible for planning and preparing meals that not only meet dietary requirements but also enhance the overall wellbeing and dining experience of our residents. Strong leadership and team coordination skills are essential, as you will oversee kitchen operations and support a caring, resident-focused environment.

Responsibilities

Oversee all aspects of food production, ensuring that meals are prepared to the highest standards of quality and safety. Develop and implement innovative menu items that reflect current culinary trends and customer preferences. Manage kitchen staff, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure efficient operations. Maintain strict adherence to food safety regulations and hygiene standards in all food preparation areas. Order frozen and dry goods weekly from approved suppliers to ensure consistent stock levels. Regularly check and compare supplier prices to ensure value for money. Cook and present meals to a high standard, considering residents' individual dietary needs including texture-modified diets, allergies, and cultural preferences. Conduct regular kitchen inspections to ensure cleanliness and organisation of workspaces. Ensure the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene in line with food safety regulations and best practices. Visit residents daily to gather feedback and ensure satisfaction with meals and service.

Qualifications

Proven experience as a Chef or in a similar catering role, ideally within a care home, healthcare, or residential setting. Strong knowledge of food preparation, nutrition, and food safety regulations, particularly in relation to older adults and special dietary needs (e.g., diabetic, low-sodium, texture-modified diets). Effective leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate a small, diverse kitchen team in a supportive and professional manner. A caring and creative approach to menu planning, with a focus on developing nutritious and appealing meals for elderly residents. Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage kitchen operations efficiently and respond calmly under pressure. Clear and respectful communication skills, both verbal and written, to liaise confidently with care staff, residents, families, and external suppliers. A recognised culinary or food hygiene qualification is desirable; equivalent practical experience will also be considered.
