Indian Global Village CIC is seeking two motivated and skilled individuals to support our community-focused initiatives during the busy period of October to December 2024. This temporary position involves a multi-faceted role that will require the selected candidates to assist in food handling, preparation, and participation in educational programs designed to promote cultural awareness through food. This is a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of our kitchen and the success of our food-based educational activities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Food Handling and Preparation
Food Preparation
:
Prepare ingredients for daily production, including cutting, chopping, peeling, and portioning.
Ensure all food is prepared according to health and safety standards.
Assist in the preparation of various cultural dishes, with a particular focus on Indian cuisine.
Cooking Assistance
:
Support chefs in cooking dishes during high-demand periods and events.
Operate kitchen equipment safely and efficiently, such as the commercial rice cooker, gas griddle, combi steamer, etc.
Quality Control
:
Maintain quality standards for all prepared dishes.
Ensure correct portion sizes and presentation are consistent with our cultural and community-focused goals.
2. Support for Educational Initiatives
Workshop Preparation
:
Assist in the preparation and organization of food-related workshops, including gathering and organizing ingredients, setting up the kitchen and materials for participants.
Demonstration Assistance
:
Help demonstrate basic cooking skills, food handling techniques, and explain the cultural significance of dishes during educational sessions.
Engage with participants (adults and children) during workshops, supporting the educational objectives of the programs.
Educational Resource Preparation
:
Support in creating visual and digital educational materials, including recipe cards, workshop handouts, and presentations.
3. Health and Safety
Kitchen Hygiene
:
Maintain the cleanliness of the kitchen, including proper sanitization of equipment and surfaces before, during, and after use.
Adhere to food safety standards and regulations, ensuring proper storage and handling of all ingredients.
Compliance
:
Follow all health and safety regulations, including those relating to food handling, personal protective equipment (PPE), and fire safety within the kitchen.
4. Event and Peak Time Support
Event Coordination
:
Assist with catering and food service during special events, ensuring timely and efficient service.
Manage increased food production during peak periods, working in a fast-paced environment to meet deadlines.
Flexibility
:
Work additional hours as required to meet the needs of larger events, community programs, and educational workshops during peak periods.
Key Skills & Competencies
1. Food Handling and Preparation
Experience in food handling and preparation (knowledge of Indian cuisine is a plus).
Ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced kitchen environment.
Strong understanding of food safety and hygiene practices.
2. Communication and Teamwork
Excellent communication skills, especially for interacting with participants in educational workshops.
Team player with the ability to collaborate effectively with chefs, other staff members, and the wider community.
3. Organizational Skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, especially during events and busy periods.
Strong attention to detail in both food preparation and the presentation of educational materials.
4. Flexibility and Adaptability
Willingness to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends, evenings, and during peak times.
Ability to adapt to a changing workload and switch between food preparation and educational roles.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
:
Basic food hygiene certificate.
Previous experience in food handling or preparation.
Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
Desirable
:
Experience working in a commercial kitchen.
Previous experience supporting educational or community programs.
Knowledge of Indian cuisine and cultural dishes.

: Commercial kitchen based within the Indian Global Village CIC in Whitehaven and Egremont
Physical Requirements
: This role involves standing for long periods, working in a fast-paced kitchen, lifting and handling heavy kitchen equipment or food supplies.

Contract length: 3 months
Pay: 12.21-15.00 per hour
Expected hours: 10 - 35 per week
