Job summary

As a Data Insight Analyst, you'll be joining our dynamic and high performing Analytics team. This fast-paced, cross-functional group is at the forefront of delivering impactful insights across Ofgem. With a diverse and knowledgeable makeup, the team plays a key role in accelerating data-driven decision-making, leveraging emerging technologies to drive digital transformation, and enabling self-service analytics.


In this role, you'll design, build, test and deploy new analytic products, while also maintaining existing ones. You'll be responsible for developing dashboards, reports, visualisations and alerts that support strategic decision-making using technologies such as Power BI, Azure Synapse, SQL and Python.


You'll work with a variety of data sources and pipelines to deliver meaningful analysis, uncovering trends, enabling drilldowns and generating forecasts. Your expertise will also contribute to training sessions, where you'll share techniques and best practices with others.



With a solid foundation in statistics, you'll bring a keen interest in how data, analytics and visualisation can influence decisions. Ideally, you'll have certified experience with visualisation tools and be confident in communicating and presenting your findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.


You'll be adept at managing and prioritising multiple projects and stakeholders, preferably with experience in data modelling, SQL for data transformation, and data science tools such as Python.

Job description



This Role:




The Data Insights Analyst role sits in the Analytics team within Data & AI function and plays a key role accelerating data driven decision making, digital transformation and enable self-service analytics across Ofgem. They will aid in the design and development of analytic products such as dashboards, reports, visualisations and alerts to answer strategic business questions using a range of modern data analytics technology e.g. Power Bi, Azure Synapse and Python.


The individual in this role will adhere to internal D&AI team best practices and standards, highlighting to the community where improvements could be made and participating in peer reviews. They will support their colleagues to promote and champion good data practice throughout Ofgem e.g. data collection standards, data visualisation, data management and operations.

Key Responsibilities



Partner with business users to design analytics products and embed insights into decision making processes. Design, build and test data products such as Power BI dashboards, semantic models and database views. Collaborate with the Data Engineering and Operations team to triage, troubleshoot and resolve support issues with products. Identify and present opportunities for improvements and enhancements to process and product. Contribute to expanding Ofgem's analytics and AI capabilities through research and innovation.

Key Outputs and Deliverables



Development of data products and supporting documentation. Lead or contribute to resolving issues in data products to ensure reliability and performance. Support the development of data collection templates, data pipelines and automation routines. Support the validation of user requirements and their technical design. Create engaging materials to promote data product adoption across Ofgem, participate in show & tells, workshops and roadshows.

Person specification



Essential Criteria



Extensive experience of using data visualisation software such as Power BI to develop reports and dashboards. (Lead criteria) Experience working with complex data models (ideally in Azure Synapse), writing SQL to manipulate and transform data, in order to create semantic models optimised for Power BI consumption. Good communication skills, ability to explain technical concepts and confident in presenting insights to both technical and non-technical users.

Desirable Criteria



Experience working in an agile team with ability to manage multiple work items and prioritise effectively. Certification in Power BI.
