About the Team 
 As part of the County Council, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is focused on the delivery of a prevention, protection and response service operating to the highest performance standards to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. 
 West Sussex County Council and West Sussex Fire and Rescue are high profile brands, serving residents, businesses and visitors within the community, and this role is focused on the West Sussex County Council . 
 Within West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, the Commercial Activities Team provides and maintains fire safety equipment, delivers expert training, and supports businesses through initiatives such as the Primary Authority Scheme. 
The Opportunity 
 Salary: 29,540 to 32,061 per annum 
 Working Pattern: Full time, 37 hours per week 
 Contract type: Fixed term or Secondment until November 2027 
 Location: Worthing, with regular county-wide travel

 As a self-motivated individual with a sound practical knowledge, as our Extinguisher Maintenance Technician, you will be expected to advocate brand and reputation, whilst liaising with internal and external customers and members of the general public, as well as interpreting information to support practical solutions compliant with regulations. 
 You will be responsible for servicing and maintaining fire safety equipment for the County Council including the Fire Service and businesses. Your responsibilities include oversight of adequate stock levels, fleet compliance and policies, along with customer prioritisation schedules. 
What are we looking for? 
 To thrive as our Extinguisher Maintenance Technician, you will need a strong practical understanding of fire safety equipment and relevant British Standards. Responsible for the annual maintenance and periodic discharge testing of portable fire extinguishers, ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations and customer Fire Risk Assessments. 
 You will carry out site surveys for new and existing premises, advising on the appropriate siting of equipment and preparing plans for installations. Accurate record-keeping is essential, including inspections, replacements, and stock movements, to support reporting and audit requirements. 
 You will provide clear, specialist advice to a wide range of customers, adapting your communication style to suit different audiences. Building effective working relationships with internal teams, external partners, and the public is key. 
 The role involves physical work, including lifting, carrying, and operating fire safety equipment, often outdoors and in varying weather conditions. You'll need to be confident working independently, using your initiative to solve problems and respond to unexpected situations. The ability to concentrate for extended periods is important for tasks such as report writing, site planning, and equipment servicing. 
 A full, clean driving licence is essential, and a dedicated vehicle will be provided to support travel across West Sussex - including to rural locations where access may be limited.
